Are dead end levels intentional?
Last night when I played this game, after much struggle I was finally able to make it to the second level again. Unfortunately the only exit available was the bonus exit. A normal exit didn't spawn and I couldn't access one of the switches needed to open up gates blocking the bonus exit because the switch for the gate was across a bottomless pit. I had no means of getting to the switch and I ended up starving to death stuck on the second level. So I ask is that level design intentional? I thought there should always be a normal accessible way to exit a level even if a bonus exit appears.

No, in theory this should not happen. We run a check to make sure that the exit is accessible between the entrance of the level and the standard exit. We allow the secret exits to spawn without satisfying this condition. It may be possible, however, that a boulder rolled into the only path that would've granted access to the exit. This is something I'll have to run by other members of the team. There are ways to get around this, but they are not reliable for every situation.

I know it's not a great solution, but if this happens again, I would encourage you to use cheats to verify what's happening. You can spawn scrolls of magic mapping to check to see where the exit actually spawned, and identify what's blocking it. Showing us a screenshot like this may help us track down what's causing the problem.
I forgot the devs were active in this forum. Thanks for the reply. To be honest it was taking me so long to get a wizard to level 2 again that when this mess happened I rage uninstalled the game. But since you replied I'll actually give the game another go. If I come across the issue again I'll definetly try to remember to screenshot it.

Sounds like something went horribly wrong in map generation, or a boulder blocked your path.

Like mistersneak said, you should try to turn on cheats and use magic mapping to see what happens, if you want to continue the run anyways, regardless of no achievements, there's always /nextlevel to be used!

I saw something similar once in the Labyrinth, where the exit was blocked off completely, unusually enough. Upon further inspection, it was actually those walls that are created by a certain trap that blocked it in.


This happens time to time, the most you can do is accept it when it does, sadly. - But don't let it get you down too harshly! As even on your failed adventures, you learnt more on the way!


If it happens again, also send the log.txt /seed, that way the developers can diagnose what happens. - That is if the exit fails to spawn entirely, or IS blocked off.

We just actually had a boulder block the way to the only exit... we couldn't move it and it was Second floor so no one had the strength to move the thing. had to restart the match.

Oof, that's happend to me before aswell, couldn't even get to gnomsih mines to maybe escape, with a pickaxe?
I one had seen two boulders clipped into eachother over an exit oddly enough. I could still use the exit, but wonder what happened there


Isn't there a class that starts with a pickaxe? Was it wanderer or merchant? I don't remember who, they start with a pickaxe, including them!
