How does multiplayer work?

Is there an in game lobby? Can I invite a friend through Steam? Or do I need to mess around with port forwarding/third party LAN software? My friend and I have tried to connect in 4 or 5 games and have trouble every single time.

im pretty sure you can just host and your friend should be able to see it when he presses join or invite maybe, only way to know is to try :)

Yeah, but trying necessitates purchasing. He's pretty bitter after our problems with Magicite, Titan Quest, and a few others.

You don't need to mess with third party LAN software. You can host a Steam lobby and it'll show up in the list when he goes to Join Game. Just set the lobby to Public when you open it up. There are rarely other lobbies visible in the list since they are removed once the game starts, so it should be a breeze for him to find you.

Note that the performance using Direct IP is better than through the Steam Network for most players and it's pretty easy to use, but not quite as easy as connecting to a Steam Lobby.
