Barony

Other games that are similar to Barony?
I'm digging Barony a lot. The multiplayer dungeon-crawling (when you can find someone) is great. Are there any other games that are essentially multiplayer dungeon crawlers?

Actually Turning Wheel made Barony because there were no first-person co-op dungeon crawlers out there and we desperately felt the world needed some. If anyone else finds more, please let us know. At the very least, we'll keep making more games in that genre. :firewood:

I think you guys are the only ones! Another RL dungeon-crawler I love is Delver, but it doesn't have multiplayer. If it did however, that would really add a lot to the experience.

You guys have something great here, keep up the good work!

This is probably one of the only other ones out there. It's old, but still fun and functional.

Thanks for posting that Insanity Engine! I had never heard of that game and I'll have to check it out.

One of our inspirations is System Shock 2, also from 1999. It's not fantasy, and it's not a RL, but it is essentially a sci-fi dungeon crawler with an open-class RPG system. One of the things I found most inspiring about the game was how you can specialize so strongly when you are playing co-op. 1 non-combatant hacker and 1 marine grunt is totally the way to play IMO.
You might consider Battlespire as well, which is kind of a first-person action-RPG. I never played it, but it has co-op multiplayer and so I kinda always wanted to.

Demise is a sequel of sorts to a game from 1995 called Mordor: The Depths of Dejenol. It was one of my favorite games when I was younger, it was an extremely interesting dungeon crawler roguelike sort of adventure game. One of the key mechanics was that it was meant to be played on a public/family computer. Every character that was made stayed in the game world, and could be invited to your party. As well as any characters who died in the dungeon could be picked up by another character and brought back to town to be rezzed.

I have significantly less experience with Demise, but I have played it, and I know it has online multiplayer with servers and I THINK a DM/GM position.

elderscrolls battlespire? if so be careful. game is hard as ♥♥♥♥. and @mistersneak, your game is awesome and i hope it gets expanded on. i would pay for dlc and i really hope you make a second game. me and my friends have had much speculation over the awesomenes that it would be.

Amulets and armor was a fun little game, but it was more akin to doom keyboard control style. I think there was a remake, but haven't quite looked into it.

Delver is kinda sorta like this game. No co op / multiplayer .

I purchased Barony because the look reminded me of Eldritch, which is a first-person-roguelike (FPR?) with a slightly-comedic Lovecraft theme to it. It's simpler in execution, as it doesn't have a lot of the inventory management and leveling systems, but it's a lot of fun.
in 1994 SLAYER for 3D0 (anyone remember that console?)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Dungeons_%26_Dragons:_Slayer
was similar to Barony in visual style and 3D procedural seed-generated dungeons.
Note when emulateing this game most 3D0 emulators will crash at the final dungeon.

Its sequel DeathKeep 1995 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeathKeep
i never got to play, but i suppose can be emulated now as well?

But in both, the creatures were sprites like in wolfenstine.
Delver cartoons the dynamic more then Barony.

Barony needs a sequel!

Perhaps more dark adult and gritty in visiual appeal for the 35 average age range of gamers today.

Would you ever do a "Sci-Fi version" of Barony too? It's not like anything similar to SS2 is around much in the same way anymore that often, especially not with properly functional MP too.
