Loading in Multiplayer - how do I resume a multiplayer game?
Hi,

I hosted a multiplayer game, we all got killed at level 8, but there was no way to resume it.

So I started another, played a few levels, and quit with saving.

When I came back, there still was no resume option.

Am I missing something?

I'm really enjoying this game with a friend (Host with no IP address), but having to restart everytime from scratch is way too punitive.

Can we safely use cheats to get back at least to the same power level, or are they going to mess our achievements?

Thanks :)

When you load the game, it should load into a screen just like when you're first hosting the game, where you wait for the other player(s) to connect.

Thanks but... where is the load button? I can't find it on the main screen, I'm a bit puzzled.
You can only ever have 1 concurrent game in Barony, unless you move the savefiles. Just click play and it will load the same character, assuming it saved properly.

The menu option is labeled 'new game', so sorry about the confusion that causes. If you already have an active gamesave, it will show a popup that says 'do you want to load this save or start a new game?' after you select 'new game.'

Thanks for answering!

I actually pressed New Game, even after the game auto saved right after the intro level and I save&quit, but I haven't been asked anything. :(

Also, both of us died, half a hour before. at about dungeon level 8. I hoped to be able to load the autosave but, I've been given no option for that.

I had to recreate my player, and the name was the only thing that was saved.

Same thing for my non-local coop friend, he had to recreate his character. And we both restarted from the intro level.

Is there permadeath?
We got very affectioned to our characters - just as in real RPGs (we were also roleplaying a bit), so it kinda ruined the experience.

Oh, wait, maybe I got a video about it. A pretty big one. I may have a look at it to see if I can find something useful to let you debug it (I'm a freelance Unity3D dev, also Steam dev, and 15y+ DM in D&D).

Please let me know if I can be of help in sorting this *possible* issue! :)
I would love to drag more friends into the dungeons!
LOL it's a roguelike, of course it's permadeath. UNLESS your ally/allies survive until the next stage, and then you come back naked with half HP.

Yep, what Yoodiv! said. Your savegame is deleted when you die. So if your co-op buddy survives to the next stage, a new autosave is generated for your revived character. Sorry if this isn't what you expected, NeatWolf. It is possible to backup your saves to cheat the system, but you'd have to do that in your own file structure. Barony isn't intended to be beaten by a single character on the first run. It's designed to expose you to a wide array of dangers, and learn how to cope with them from each failed run. Finishing the dungeon is earned through blood sweat and tears typically over the course of many, many deaths and restarts. Any individual run shouldn't take more than 2-4 hours, and surviving it is the tough part. If you go through and beat it in a single run by restoring save files, the game may appear to be rather shallow, since you will have been exposed to far fewer randomized challenges, and will have been required to learn far less to progress. It's your game though, and I encourage you to do as you please. <3

Sure, *outside* the game, there's a tag saying "roguelike", and I went back to check the description, that states "brings back the cryptic and intricate designs of classic roguelikes such as Nethack and melds them with RPGs like Ultima Underworld, System Shock, and Daggerfall."

Now, skipping the part where I argue about permadeath being a trait of MOST roguelike and not ALL of them, and that there are lots of roguelike-like which may adopt or not permadeath, when I launch the game it's totally not obvious what's going to happen, which may be a choice by design - learn about it by the good old-school trial and error.

In any case, I generally play a game and decide myself the genre it falls in, and not vice versa, so a game may be declared as roguelike, but may just take a few elements from it. There are also rogue-like that implement the rogue-like sub genre but it's wrapped inside a levelling system which can actually influence the next gameplay.

(and btw if you peek at my library you can tell it's not the first roguelike I play, since I've been an editor for quite some time, I appreciate the time you took to explain me the roguelike genre but that was not the point :) )

aaanyway, closing this offtopic: :)

I am not here to debate the nature of the game or criticise its mechanics (which I enjoy and I'm really having fun with :) ), I'm just pointing out that, when

* I play in coop
* the game autosaves
* whether the second player logs off before I "Quit and save", or not
* I'm still alive when I "Quit and save".
* next time I press New Game, it doesn't load the autosaved game.

Which, according to what you say, may be an unwanted behaviour.

Is this a known issue?

If you are not dead, your savegame is intact. Who quits first should not have any bearing unless one of the players is dead. Any other behavior with you missing a save would be a bug. There is a problem when one co-op player has died, and the other hasn't, and then the players exit the session. This leaves the co-op game un-continuable since saves from all parties are required to have a savegame, and the dead player does not have one.

Thanks, I will try to reproduce the issue I'm having which seems a little bit different and I'm going to get back to you with the required steps to trigger it again :)
