If you haven't played FC3 however, I would recommend FC3 rather than Primal or 4, as it's the best Far Cry game.
Personally I liked all 3 games and would definitely recommend them all. FC3 has an awesome story and characters (Vaas is just incredible), awesome missions, FC4 looks beautiful, has nice new gameplay additions (coop is really nice), and the Shangri La parts are one of the most beautiful things I've seen in any game, and Primal had a huge, beautiful map, and is really refreshing in the FC series.
Description is as follows:
"Finish the game in Survivor mode (Expert Difficulty) and the Permadeath option activated... Forget it... No-one will ever achieve it."
Even Ubisoft acknoledges that is going to be literal cancer to get. But It will also be a fun challenge and definently extend playability.
If you want a more realistic setting and actually feel like your in the game, Primal
Far Cry 4 has more content, Co-op, map creator, all up to you! Idk Far cry 4's setting was not that memorable to me, personally
If you've played FC3 first, chances are you will like Primal, because it is a very nice change of pace while still feeling familiar enough to comfortably jump right into. FC4 will just feel like more of the same, and by the end of 3 you might not be in the mood for FC3+, so to speak. Mechanics in Primal are fresh, setting is fresh, seemingly limited inventory is nicely expanded throughout and the uses for each weapon vary enough to keep you entertained, vehicles are replaced with a few rideable animals, so on and so forth. It's also a lot more gorgeous and a lot more immersive, especially environmentally, having this sort of Redwood Secret Valley feel, with a bit of Frozen North and Marshy South tossed in, with a hell of a lot of atmosphere stacked on top of that. Story is Primitive like the title - it is a simple overarching story of rebuilding your tribe and revenge against a couple rival tribes with their own backstories. Between the lines there is a little bit of spiritual stuff, prophecy type stuff, and so on to sort of spice up the simple overarching narrative a bit, but it's not deep or anything, so that might be its only fault alongside villains that are not as charismatic as Vaas. That, and no coop, which alone is a huge fault for some (I couldn't care less I like SP games too).
If you have not played FC3, then you will likely prefer FC4, because from the offset there is just more to it. Big one for some, coop. Guns, helos, cars, boats, so on and so forth. It will feel like a bigger and more expansive game which will likely have newcomers leaving with a bigger impression left on them. The villain, Pagan Min, is not quite as actively charismatic in a weird way as you may have heard Vaas was, but he has his own eccentricities and honesly, I prefer him...not at first mind you, but when all was said and done and I saw everything the game had to offer. He is a fairly deep character, and yet very simple because...well, he has no real objectives. Anymore than that would be giving away the story, but lets just say the lines of good and evil are a lot more skewed in FC4 than the more black and white tone of the others. Kyrat/Nepal is very pretty and the spiritual stuff is nice as well. The story is so so, but there's a bit more going on here than in Primal.
Both are very solid games. I was not expecting anywhere near the immersion I am getting out of Primal though, so for me having played all the FC games, Primal and 3 are my two favorites (and are pretty much even). 4 is great though, and I would recommend it to anyone, but I got burnt out on it pretty fast because even though it is a proper upgrade from FC3 mechanically, the end result just felt too similar regardless, so Primal's fresh take on the FC formula and how it shows how good this formula works in a new type of open world setting just resonated a lot more for me personally.
