The first icicle he is standing under is a gimme, it kills his buds and sets you up fot the first takedown. The next two I just try to hover underneath an icicle, use my pet to draw mob aggro, dodge arrows and shoot Ull in the back to get his attention. Then when he walks over nail him with the icicle and follow up with another takedown from the rear. If you are doing it right you can finish him off in under a minute. No bombs. No spears. I did have to sacrifice a couple of pets though.
No pro here, but traps + takedowns do big damage.
Pets & beserk bombs/shards to keep his troops quiet(ish).
I beat the game on Surv/Exp/Perma last month also, I found Ull considerably easier to beat than Batari. Wasn't tricky to lure Ull underneath the icicles. But failing that, just throw bee bombs at him which stops him from coming at you.. Move further away in that time and lob some spears/arrows into his head.
So long as you keep like 2 Udam warriors berserkered, all you have to focus on is Ull.
Ironically I found out the trick to beating Batari. The first try was 20 minutes and I didn't do any damage. But the 2nd time I tried it. I flanked her and shot her perfectly in the back of the head with double fire arrows and she died in 3 minutes with the gate still closed. LOL
It's incredibly lazy writing but Ubisoft aren't known for doing anything new, since Far Cry 3 its been the same thing with a different flavour. Boss fights are tedious and only serve to destroy any immersion you have.
"Oh, this commander needs enough damage to kill a battalion, doesn't change their behaviour when I spear them and I have to hold my mouth just so while hopping on my left foot and singing a psalm to hurt them. Makes perfect sense."
Seriously devs, do something different. Surprise us.
Found out you could do even faster (normal mode, haven't tried Survival yet): set traps before you enter the main cave. I did the first icicle, threw in 4 or 5 spears, by the time he climbed the slope to get to the upper platform where I was he had stepped in 3 traps, end the fight-ending sequence triggered. I should have do that with Batari too (bees are definitely a good way to immobilize targets where you want them.)
