Do you own an animal such as a cat or, dog? If so, do you ever pet it? If not, give it to someone that willl because, you're in no need of one.

Because it is nice to be able to do it.

Simple: Immersion.

Oh look, a double rainbow, what does it mean?

Because some people like to be able to do it. That is it. There is no gameplay reason for it other than people like to do it.

What's the purpose of repeating your question over and over?
There were many legit responses but you still continue asking...

I used that meme just because some things doesn't have any meaning.
Especially in video games.
They're just there for astetic purpose, immersion or simply just because it's nice to pet your lovely beasts.

Funny thing: I recently encountered a pack of Dholes and I could kill 2 of them while I wanted to tame the last one.
It didn't want to get distracted from the bait that easily and bit Takkar pretty hard.
When it finally reacted to a bait, first thing I let Takkar do was petting his newly tamed animal, even if he was badly injured by its bites. ^^

I was in the process of taming a cave bear and a pack of wolves started attacking it. It drove them off and proceeded to kill me. I got away by jumping off a cliff.
Never got the bear but I tracked down those wolves( at least I think they were the same ones) and killed every one of them.

I had a situation like that with a cave bear. Tried to escape by diving into water, then I remembered, bears can swim. It did not end well for me.

An ideal game might have be a beast bonding level you're not aware of. Petting now and again would reinforce it and add a few points. Could be that the lower the bonding level, the more chance the beast has of taking off for something of interest, or being lax on obeying commands. With bonding at maximum the animal does as it's told!
