key binding

I'm missing something with key binding. I can't seem to change the binds. Help?

Go to options - keyboard and mouse - customise controls
options - gamepad - control scheme

I've found where I'm supposed to do it. They just won't change. I click on the line for the action...see a ? instead of the original keybind...but I can't assign a new keybind to it. It's super frustrating. I usually play mmorpg's so I use ESDF instead of WASD so that I can have more keybinds without contorting my hands.
