Is there a way to make beasts eat corpses?

I was hunting with my wolf and it had taken some damage, but since it was minor I was going to ignore it until it was more hurt. Then I noticed after a few more kills that it stopped and started eating an Udam corpse and got its health back. Is there a way to force it to do this? I tried telling it to move over bodies while injured, but it doesn't start eating. Is this just random behavior?

I see it as, it's your job to reward them from time to time, as you would anyanimal in your steed for good behavior or, just plain caring. However, if they need food, they will eat when necessary or, you call them back to you and feed them yourself. Always be sure when they're fighting for you, to keep an eye on their health bar. Don't let them die.

If you tell it to stay next to the dead bodies, it should eventually start eating them. It works for me.
