Might be a cultural thing, might be desperation. It's never directly shown but it's pretty heavily implied that the Udam are in dire straights up in their homeland so it's entirely possible that they don't in fact have enough food to go around.
I've been trying to figure that one out too. All I know is that it causes intense migraines and is serious enough to kill people. That could be any number of things.
It's a fertility goddess. The exact significance is a spoiler so I'll mark it: The Udam are having a population crisis, their birthrate has dropped considerably and so they're desperate to have more babies.
Because Takkar seems to be the only one capable of doing it. He has some kind of spirit connection to animals which makes taming a *lot* easier than it would be in real life, and it's possible if not likely that he's the only person on the planet currently capable of taming beasts.
I also imagine that the Udam's primitive and desperate state makes them unsuited to the task (or perhaps they don't have the surplus resources to spare to feed beasts while training them) and the Izila's general technological superiority over the other tribes makes them feel that they simply don't need beasts (not to mention the fact that their affinity with fire probably scares most animals off).
I've never really thought about it too much - but potentially is it to do with the rot bane? (beserker bombs). Constantly being exposed to those fumes could do a number on their health. Much like smoking or drugs nowadays.
The part that makes me wonder though is the fact that some kind of bone dust is apparently a temporary cure for the affliction, which I feel would narrow down the possibilities a bit if that is even loosely based on real world medical knowledge (even if it's outdated, like the primitive trepanning procedure you do for Dah).
Its kind of makes sense now, rot bane = (beserker mode) might have had affected more than simply their minds, considering they were eating all kinds of "potions" perhaps one of them did lead to lesser fertility or having more male kids.
I mean the south fire tribe does attack with mixed male/female,
but the north tribe are mostly male.
So in fact their potions to make them stronger, did make them weak.
Honestly I just chalk that up to the Izila's seemingly matriarchal society, and the Wenja being the protagonist faction so (as much as I hate to use the term) "muh feminism" demands that women get to be hunters too. Udam seem to be pretty traditional as their society goes and value brute strength so I think that even if they did have more women (which who's to say they don't, and they're not just cloistered away somewhere in the homeland?) they would probably still have all-male warbands.
