Edit: I find it especially strange that I don't see black dholes now, since I saw one with nearly every pack of 3-4 before. I've even gone back to areas where dholes are common to try and find one, but I'm only finding individual common dholes, even when I go without a tame active to keep from chasing them off.
Be sure to spare the side quests with the paws, as those contain animals.
There is one with around 10 badgers and one with around 10 dholes.
That one with the dholes has also a high chance to spawn a rare black dhole.
Here is a small guide for those side quests and which animals they contain:

Have a look onto the one with the boar. On my regular savegame without permadeath that bear killed me once.
I am glad that I wasn't on my permadeath savegame. The bear swims from the other side of the river to the action with the boars and he even kills the boars for you.
Well, he is more interested in Takkar of course, if you're closer than any boar.
The reason you've probably never seen them attack and eat prey animals in the game is because their AI is scripted for them to spend about 10-15 seconds taunting/growiling/chirping at an enemy before attacking.
They are also situated in parts of the map with un-even terrain and few ideal sized prey animals like goats and deer. (they seem to share territory with larger herbivores like yak and rhinos, and other larger predators like sabre-tooth tigers.)
This, coupled with the fact they are one of the slowest animals in the game, means most of their prey will be easily able to run away from them.
So then, badgers must starve to death rather often in this game, if they prefer to scream at everything instead of eating it. >-> Explains why they're so damn hard to find.
