Multiplayer Working?

So, recently I brought this game whilst it was on sale because one of friends recommended it to me. I promptly downloaded the game, finished the tutorial and was like 'let's play multiplayer together!' and then discovered then neither me or either of my 3 other friends, who had also brought the game, could play together. I went online wondering 'surely the multiplayer works, right?' saw a couple of threads on the website's forums (http://making-history.com/forum/thread/388182/1 and http://making-history.com/forum/thread/343889/1) and was like 'maybe one of these should work'.

I then portforwarded the port 9103 for both UDP and TCP (Just in case), and once again attempted to host a game, which still yielded no results. I also then downloaded the program Hamachi, set-up a private network, added my friends, and tried to host a game with no success and no-one could join by inputting the I.P. for either Local or I.P. Address, and it didn't appear on the server list. Exhausted, I finally went online to see if anyone has even played this game online and possibly decided to uploaded it to YouTube and only found one video, which by the way is in German (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA1TbF0C-bg) which has a comment from the author saying 'you can invite your friend at steam to your lobby to play with him. Have Fun :)' which we then tried but to no avail.

Can someone please help shine some light on how this works, if it works that is...

In the past my mate and I always played Making History the Calm and the Storm. It worked perfectly. However, that was on the base edition not the Gold Edition. I believe Gold Edition is the problem as I can't play with a mate

Can you still play using MHI?

I am not with that friend anymore so I have no clue if it works on the base game. I can say it did work in the past, it just doesn't work in the past
