Gary Grigsby's War in the East

Gary Grigsby's War in the East

War in the East, War in the West, or War in the Pacific?
I'm currently leaning towards War in the Pacific because I find the emphasis on naval and air combat in the pacific fascinating, but I'm wondering which one you guys would suggest and why. Also as a note, I have never played a Gary Grigsby game before but I've been studying them and watching videos, and I feel I'm ready to jump into one at last.

If you've never played a GG game before, I'll throw out another idea. Uncommon Valor was the first game in the War in the Pacific series. It covers the action near Guadalcanal in 42-43. As such, there's a lot less to deal with than WitP and it's only $19.99. WitP was just an enhanced version of Uncommon Valor taken to the entire Pacific (although UV uses 30 miles hexes and WitP uses 50 or 60). WitP AE brought the scale back down to UV level, IIRC, so it's truly massive. On the other hand, if you like having a forum where you can ask questions and get help, WitP AE is the active forum at Matrix. Normally I'd say buy the game on the subject that most interests you, because you are more likely to stick with it. You probably understand the units/weapons/situation already which will help in the game. UV/WitP/WitP AE are definitely air/sea games first and foremost, with the land game minor in comparison. WitE is the opposite, with land being 90% of the game, and the air part being something you can easily ignore (and the naval is totally abstract). WitW is more of a mix of ground and air, with a very small amount of naval. I, and I think the majority of players, have found the UV/WitP system harder to learn than the WitE system (and I was involved in designing both). The air game in WitW adds a new dimension that makes it more multi-dimensional like WitP, but also harder to learn for that reason. I see the breakdown in percent as follows:

------------------Ground/Air/Sea

WitP series -- 10/45/45
WitE ----------- 90/9/1
WitW ---------- 60/35/5

Expect it to be an effort to learn any of these, so pick the area you have the most interest in, and that you want to learn more about. Good luck.

I have them all, but for value for time played WITP AE is the clear winner for me. Like the OP, the naval game fascinates me most. The importance of the logistics flow is critical to success and you will have to manage it yourself to be successful. No running ships around forever, you have to send them in for repair, meet scheduled refits, and little things like making sure you have fuel handy which will have have to bring in from the US or Middle East.
I was a little surprised at jabgamers rating. As a player, I would rate WITP as 10/15/75 when you take into account the logisitcs angle, but that's just me.

Thanks for the detailed responses as I was interested as well, I do have WitE already.

I think warren442001 has a good point about the naval game being more dominant due to the logistics angle. If only because you have to run all those convoys around and take care of all those ships. My thinking was more in terms of one needing to fully understand the air game because air forces can trump naval forces, but probably there is more time spent on the naval than the air. Also, I have to admit It's been over 10 years since I worked on WitP so I'm not up on all the great stuff that AE brought to the game.

I also feel interested for WitP for the combination of Air, Land and Naval forces. But even the Matrix site marks it as "Expert" while WitE is just "advanced".

I'll keep with WitE until I can be sure that I can defeat the AI in something else than easy, then I'll advance to WitW and maybe then WitP.

Who knows? Maybe by then we'll have it on Steam too.

Beware newcomers: Last week I have decided to pick up WitP and I am not quite happy with it. WitP is not really a pretty well aged game. Clunky controls, rusty gameplay and requires modding for nicer graphics (A nice map + better icons imo - install in a different folder and just catch the bmp´s you prefer: https://www.designmodproject.de/download/download/7-war-in-the-pacific-admirals-edition/92-dmp-witp-ae-komplett-modifikation).

I think I will return soon to WitE - much better to control and more fun to play, in West I am missing the Atlantic battle and you: maybe just wait for WitE 2. ;-)

PS: Thx devs for your games, happy working & gl + success. :)

Edit: Game feels bit better after some changes:

"..\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -f -px1920 -py1080 -skipVideo -altFont -autosave -fixedArt -nofire

+ minimize the delay times in the preferences + change the message time to your liking (you can skip them later with escape).
