@WyaatEarp - thanks for the post! On our end, we'd list Dune, the Alien trilogy and Mechwarrior as biggest influences for our world, the Star Traders universe.

Ah just kind of looks like space marines vs genestealers

Okay, I'll bite; but just remember, you asked.

To be fair (and realistic) toward both arguments, there's a bit of "gotcha!" going on in Templar Battleforce with respect to first appearances.

As a big fan of Warhammer 40,000 (go Blood Ravens!), I don't think it's any accident that Templar Battleforce looks like something that would appeal to me. Not gonna dispute first appearances. But it's all smoke and mirrors — and in a way that's actually pleasantly surprising, IMO.

Warhammer 40,000 is the bleakest setting I'm aware of. Humankind is so perpetually situated on the edge of annihilation by thought-manipulating enemies that individual liberties are long-extinct luxuries.

If the Star Traders universe is fated for that kind of outcome, you wouldn't know it by talking to a Templar Knight; and that's probably the major difference between the Emperor's fascist Imperium and the prophet Shalun's Exodus fleet.

See, Templar Knights probably bear more similarities to NATO's peacekeeping forces than to the Imperium's iron fist. They haven't given up on individual freedoms. They'll even protect and encourage border worlds who wish to have no part of the Exodus's allied factions and houses.

And this is despite the presence of enemies like the Terrox and Narvidians — who are both capable of meddling with human minds and turning them against each other. The Terrox, similar to H.R. Giger's aliens and WH40K's Tyranids, are worse than both because they seem to have a viral impact on human neurology that's similar to Chaos's taint.

Templar Knights don't live for hundreds or thousands of years.

They are average-sized humans, not seven-foot-tall super-genetic clones.

They don't wear power armor, but instead pilot ten-foot-tall Leviathan mechs.

Should I go on?

It`s definitely made to cater to 40k fans
The first missions are very space hulky, plow ahead on a overrun spaceship

The terrox scream tyranids, the hunters/predators are very similar to genestealers

The templars look space marineish, from the sword and plasma sidearm captain to the soldier with power gauntlet
Lore wise, both are elite strike teams with ingrained superior combat capabilities

The terrox cultists make the genestealer cult come to mind
the cult it`s a warp beacon to call the hive fleet....

The star traders are also somewhat reminiscing of 40k rogue traders

Then obviously if we go deeper the two world are vastly different....
still i find it surprising that 40K isn`t even listed as a faint inspiration.

Its unlikely that 40K hasn't influenced, or inspired, the game to some degree, just by virtue of how well known 40K is. But that said, the Human mind is adept at seeing patterns. If you're specifically looking for similarities then you'll likely find some. The core concepts of Elite strike teams fighting Alien threats are similar enough that further down the line similarities are likely to pop up even if the Devs had somehow never heard of 40K. To me, it feels like the Dev team knows 40K relatively well and has tried to avoid unnecessary overlap. Honestly, I see more of Mechwarrior in this than anything else. But admittedly, I know MW the best and only know about 40K from games and here say.

Mechwarrior happens to be the first table top game Cory and I ever played :D Had a box set with the little paper stand ups in elementary school lol. We loved that game so much, played it until it fell apart.

We also love the Alien(s) movies to no end. Giger's influence on our alien races is hard to downplay.

What about the gene-seed thing ?

Just admit it already ;]
Captain Electric Apr 15, 2017 @ 9:43am
LOL wut? Templars don't use gene seeds. And the virus that causes the propagation of genetic memory in Templar Battleforce would probably be seen as some kind of xeno blight by WH40K's Imperium.

While I see how there are comparisons to be made at first glance, I'm more amused by the fact that TB actually has very little in common with 40K in reality (years-long 40K fan here). Nothing about the Templars or their history is similar to the Space Marines really, except for sharing the military science fiction and horror genres, which is not Games Workshop's invention.

@Captain Electric - thanks for the post! Agreed ... no gene seed thing at all. Templars are Zendu - a subrace that are physically like normal humans except they have a genetic mutation that allows them to pass their memories, and all the memories of their descendants on to their children. This immense wealth of knowledge (and most importantly for Templars, muscle memory) allows the Templar Militant to be the fighting force they are, and to pilot these cumbersome mechs to war. The other sects of the Zendu have turned their genetically inherited knowledge to other purposes.

whats 40k influence ?

Do a search on the Steam store for Warhammer 40,000 and you'll find a lot of different games by different studios, all part of the 40K universe, all licensed by Games Workshop. It started off as a tabletop war game about thirty years ago.

Here's a good introduction to the tabletop game and universe.

There's also Warhammer Fantasy or just 'Warhammer'. 40K is the futuristic version of these.

I'm really looking forward to seeing you continue to expand on the Templars and on other parts of the TB universe that are hinted at or unexplored. The exiled fleets, the nature of their situation, and the gameplay definitely have me hooked.
Trese Brothers  [developer] Apr 17, 2017 @ 1:42pm
@Captain Electric - the 4 other sects will be featured heavily in our next game, Star Traders: Legacy of Shalun (working title)!

The point of the gene seed is valid.
Technically speaking it is TOTALLY different, but it`s functionally very similar
If i`m soaring above ground thanks to a magic cloak or a jet pack, to an outside and far observer, the result is the same.. i`m flying.
A chihuahua is a chihuahua and a dobermann is a doberman, but both are dogs.

Mash together similar elements, get similar results:
Big hostile universe, alien`s aliens and super Templar crusaders......the closest thing out there is WH40k

Show me a training montage and then some flying dudes hitting each other with energy beams and crashing into mountains... i see Dragonball
It may really be supersoldiers training in power armors and jetpacks and shooting energy pistols... I`m still seeing Dragonball.
Now that`s a tinsy bitsy tad hyperbolic, but i hope i`ve made my point

Anyway... since it seems like it`s a big point that 40k had no influence whatsoever i`m gonna believe and drop it.
The Game it`s good and the world is interesting, who cares what inspired it
