Base Capture/Abandoned Base help?

Heya! Picked up the Ashes DLC and had been running a sandbox campaign as them. Just ran into a problem I've not encountered before. I managed to eliminate a Reborn garrison at Hydra and moved in my capture ships, but the station just went to an "abandoned" status? Instead, my ships docked there. I am not technically at war, nor can I declare it, for lack of base quantity. Is that the issue? Did I just waste two hours on a huge L? Thanks y'all, any help is appreciated : )

If you blockade a base for long enough it will be abandoned (unless it is a military base or the last base of a faction). As a player you can abandon your bases too (unless it's the last one).

Abandoned bases will sit idle for a time until they will revert back to their original faction. You can't capture them during this time. For a base to be abandoned it is around 10 mins in overworld time - after the base sits at it's lowest morale.

It will sit abandoned for max of 5 minutes, minimum 3.
