The TonR is super reliable and accessible as a wingmate in the early game too. The equivalent of an railgun SMG on top of a decent top turret means it outperformed my AI controlled pride gunships by a large margin.
But again, "Cant crewkill with it" and taking over the civilians I expect might end up more time consuming than rolling over the TSF if I actually wanted to build them.
TSF ships in general completely destroys the competition, but are harder to obtain.
Some ships are dark horses due to having superior turret coverage making them amazing while controlled by the AI.
I should say in overworld view though.
Corvette class.
The Rhino line would be so insane for their weight class in general if the rest of them could use their secondary weapons.
"Over here we have the Reborn CutterG. It has two cannons and a couple turrets."
"What's that over there?"
"Oh, that's the Beggar RhinoG. It has two cannons, a couple turrets, AND dual missile launchers(that the AI can't use)"
I'm enormously fond of the Ton Rail as a personal craft, because I'm not a very good shoot and the Ton Rail is very forgiving of bad shooting. It isn't very good for AI wingmen, but I've had a lot of success sitting at the top of a base defense mission, sniping various fighters and gunships for credits.
I love them, but the top reason I kept having to replace them is they kill fighter/gunship spam SO much faster than even TSF Rex gunships, was that they basically get excited and go charging off alone to the next pile of enemy ships.
The bulldog for instance turns into an absolute monster.
speaking to before those changes,
The mu raider was a favorite of mine for gunships. The pride reaper heavy fighter and kind interceptor both impressed me at opposite ends of the fighter spectrum.
Corvettes the Rhino series is really powerful, a full compliment of longbows also can engage at awesome ranges to great effective.
For personal flying, I really like flying a swordfish, just one shotting fighters with the railguns is a blast.
Frigates/destroyers, I like the ronin and mendoza’s for non capture operations.
The mendoza’s command ability is too much to pass up, very powerful, both have awesome weapons that serve well.
Oooooor replace everything other than fighters with a tsf option when available.................. I honestly am not that impressed with the parez for its cost, but all other ship classes are very good from the tsf, if not strictly best in class.
I love the idea of the Longbows and other "Light" missile support ships, but it feels like you are essentially being lead into a trap choice with how they are good for HONEST fights, but even with my liking the Reborn I didn't build any Longbows except to stand out as Radar coverage spies on the overworld. And I will not be putting much work into the seemingly deadly TSF Lancer frigates (missile AND torpedo spam!) I singled out as priority targets, due to looking towards the future.
"I love the Anubis, everyone loves the anubis! Aren't missiles cool?"
Lotan description -"When active, the beam emits so much energy into the nearby space that it's been observed to detonate incoming munitions before they hit the ship. Creating a energy barrier at the front of the ship."
"...Are you serious?"
Meanwhile, guess what is covered head to toe in railguns? It's the Roals Frigate.
we need to get a community balance patch going for the ships.
Light fighter - Grim (need to do pride missions for story, and it IS best light fighter. Recommend as 1st ship to buy on game start)
Fighter overall - Cobra (fast, high dps, convenient railguns)
Light gunship - Ultra (fast, good and need pride gunship for story mission)
Gunship overall - Ray (the proper military one from black market, it's so good it overshadows Apollo)
Light corvette - Apollo (Good frontal firepower, largest ship that can use overdrive, barely fast enough to never be cornered by fighters. Anything larger is too slow)
Medium corvettes and above are all too slow to control battle flow or dodge attacks and can't use overdrive, which is why they are bad as player ships.
For AI ships you just want cost-efficient tanky bricks with high dps. And later when you solve cost and availability problems just superior TSF bricks.
Fighter - Duelist Mk2
Gunship - Raider
Corvette - Swordfish or TSF Correa (TSF Intrepid has good stats, but suicidal AI)
Frigate - 4x Stealjoy or Bolter (Capture is massively profitable and the only way to acquire TSF stuff before capturing their bases), 1x Roals as fleet leader if not DEs yet
Destroyer - Brigs are easy enough to obtain, TSF ships are better though
Player ship:
Light Fighter - Hornet - No need to fight in a light fighter, so keep the Hornet until you get a heavy fighter
Fighter - Pug - Having all guns on turrets gives you more DPS because shot will miss less, tractor beam can mess up enemies' aim, making it better than the Perez
Gunship - Ray - 3000 range main gun outranges everything, so you can make enemies chase you and shoot them without them being able to fire back
Corvette - LittleBigJoy - The beam guns cut through fighters and gunships that can catch you, and outranges some of the guns on other corvettes
Frigate - Ronin - Once again a beam gun that cuts through smaller enemies, and has gatling guns for close in defense
Destroyer - Envy - Can be obtained sooner than Mendoza, and benefits from player piloting. Can dodge with thrust upgrade and diagonal movement, but still better off left in the hands of the AI.
AI Ships
Fighter - Vulture - Tough, cheap, and has turret
Gunship - Buzzard - With 4 gatling turrets it's got more DPS than some destroyers
Corvette - Rhino T - Torpedoes got long range, so it's won't get killed as often
Frigate - Horus - Tough so you can use it as a meatshield, Lancer is better but harder to get
Destroyer - Priam - The Brig has better stats, but often doesn't turn to use all 3 railguns.
Player piloted:
Light Fighter: Grim
Overall Fighter: Reaper (with turret upgrade), then PerezMk2
Gunship: Pilar, then Bulldog or Ray
Corvette: Swordfish, then Eagle
Frigate: Roals (if you can cap it/build it), then Ronin or Drake
Destroyer: Victory, then HadesB or Mendoza
AI Piloted:
Disposable Fighter Screen: Hound Mk 1
Mainline Heavy Fighter: Reaper (360 degree coverage on starting turrets, innate shields, small hitbox)
Gunship: Raider, then Bullfrog
Corvette: Swordfish, then Intrepid
Frigate: Horus, then Marauder
Destroyer: Priam, then Victory
For my fleet/own piloting;
-Reaper
-Pillar
-Eagle; very flexible as my own ship/Swordfish for large fleets in tac mode.
-Horus, upgraded with everything for missions, it can hold the DPS of the Talon for along time with its shields, missiles give it a decent bite...
Ronin for attacking bases and large ships in tac mode, seems to be cost effective.
-Just started on destroyers but that ugly Brig is a pretty good sponge to allow Ronins to work, Seem like the victory will be the next upgrade, that main gun is nasty...
