Capturing bases + owning platforms
So, I've been playing the game a bit recently and I'm starting to get to the point where I have too much money and not enough to do with it (at least at the point I'm at). I would like to start getting some larger ships, but I have some questions about how you go about getting those. Any help is appreciated!

So, first question is: What is the best way to capture a base if I want to start building larger ships (corvettes, frigates, etc). I know you have to capture bases, but I cant figure out a particularly cost-effective way to go it.

Second question is slightly different. I was wondering if there's any benefit in owning production platforms. I bought a food platform (I was hoping it would be automated and earn me a nice income), but it appears to just be like any other platform. Is there a way to automate it?

Thanks for reading!

I know you have to capture bases, but I cant figure out a particularly cost-effective way to go it.

So currently you can either play the game and follow the story or start the game in "Sandbox mode" (a new option to do this has been added in the main menu when you click New Game). In "Story and Sandbox" I've restricted base capture ships because I didn't want the player to capture all the bases then attempt to play the story - which just wouldn't work.

But anyway - capturing bases is meant to fairly cost intensive - and I'm currently working on making it even more so with the new "at war" concept - where when you capture a base - that faction isn't going to forgive or forget and will respond as it should.

Either way - it might seem like it takes a ton of capture ships to get a base - but there is a "blockade" mechanic that softens up base defenders, making it not so bad.

Owned production platforms - these platforms automatically build cargo pods, so you can scoop those up yourself then sell them, or if you have auto traders they will do that for you. It's not meant to be a huge money earner, instead it's more meant for later on when you own a bunch of bases and want to have a good production chain and economy setup. In bases you can build ships which reduces the price of a ship by far - but uses resources, so in the later part of the game my goal is that the player doesn't really care about money, but cares more about ore/energy/etc.

So does this mean that you are restricted from capturing bases early on?

I'm at the part where I need a frigate to take on the Outsider Frigate and had thought to buy a Pride Frigate because I've liked their ships up until now, only to find out they don't have a shipyard so can't commission it and I've tried RNG to buy one when it "happens to be for sale" and it hasn't worked during an hour of going between Shark and Lion

I had thought to try Pirating with Reborn and capture a pride base or just capture their base and make a frigate with them, but I don't know if they have a base capture ship that I could get as it's all ship capture except for the Greed which is a Transport, but is that just resources? Or could I buy a "troop pod" to put on it? And if that is the case.. Could I not just put 8 of those on one of my Hercules? XD

Or is it just impossible to capture bases in Story and Sandbox Mode entirely?

Pretty much every faction has a base capture ship. Here's all the base capture ships I know of and their respective factions.

Beggars: Nojoy
Reborn: Glutton
Kind: Liquidator
Civilian Conglomerate: Wildcat
Pride: Spartan
MU: Claimjumper
TSF: Phalanx

In story mode - yes - the ships needed to capture bases are unlocked via doing "story" type missions.

In sandbox mode - you can buy base capture ships from pirate and black market bases to get you started.

Ahh understood, so they've been "hidden" was wondering where a few of those ships went :)

Thanks for the quick feedback

To be a bit more precise - in story mode you need to own a base to be able to build base capture ships. In sandbox mode you can buy base capture ships (from criminal factions) without needing to own the base.

How do you get to own a base if you need those to capture?

Or are you just not meant to have a base in Story Mode?

That's for you to find out by playing the story missions.

Or are you just not meant to have a base in Story Mode?

You are meant to have everything in every mode - I am a generous type.

Awesome, worried me for a second thinking that Story Mode was limited to being a situation like Galaxy On Fire where the limitation of your base is a Garage (which your game has as a base feature).

Will suck it up and get a Frigate though Reborn then, thanks a bunch for the help and conversing :) Truly the best dev out there
