Scourge of War: Waterloo

Scourge of War: Waterloo

8-Hour Battles????
Hey what's up a lot of people are saying this game has battles that are in legit real time & can actually several hours in the real world to get through. Is that true? IRL a lot of that 8 hours for those historical battles was nothing happening a bunch of dudes moving around and getting coordinated so they could start to get serious about the Civil War.

I can handle some pretty legit long battles like in the Graviteam games but I definitely can't do an 8 hour battle even if I am able to save mid battle and come back later that is way too long and I have a job.

Not really the game for you then.

There are small scenario's that are timed to as little as 30 minutes. But they are just small scenario's which is really not the strength of this game. Totalwar and other games can do those sort of scenario's just as well.

The real meat of this game is being able to participate in full size Napoleonic battles even if you only command one brigade on the field. But inevitably these large battles take a long time to play in real time.

If you then progress to large scale Multi-Player battles where perhaps six or eight people are commanding various brigades and divisions then you are really looking at commiting and entire evening (perhaps 7 - 8 hours) to that event, and there's no time out even for a tiolet break.

But really there is no other way of doing it if you want the full battle experience.

Perhaps a better option for you would be Ultimate General Getysburg/Civil War. That game breaks battles down into phases and deals with everything at Brigade rather than battlaion level. So, it's less complex and runs in accelerated real time so large battles take just an hour or two to complete.

I did a full battle of waterloo a few months ago with some friends and it went on for almost 8 hours in real time. We didn't even stop for lunch.

Yeah full battles can take that long. It is slightly speeded up. But yes. Much of the time in the game is spent, simply moving forces to where they are needed. If you plan on a big attack, you can easliy spend an hour setting it up with only artillery dueling.
And just like in real life, after 3 hours of slow paced grinding action with units getting worn down. Suddnely a crises happnes and half your army is in dangure of collapsing. And suddnely you feel the game is moving way to fast and you really really need that brigade of light cavarly but they take WAY to long for you get get up to plug that hole.

I have serious beefs with this game from a techincal standpoint. But gameplay wise it's second to none.
