If you want to play, you can still. There's one community project that is trying to get a server emulator for the og game. Request tester access through this Discord server: discord .gg/jBmTmMj (remove spaces)

No,it's been offline for sometime now,to know the truth why? that may take some digging.

I don't recall if it was ever explained outright and in complete detail from Nexon staff (likely for legal reasons) but these have been my assumptions based on bits and pieces that were shared.

Ghost in the Shell is not owned by Nexon, so the game has to have its license for GITS renewed every few years to keep using the iconic intellectual property in addition to the game/software itself requiring a license of its own. Usually these contracts only last about 2 or 3 years at a time and they cost a lot of money ("a lot" of money being an understatement). The end of 2017 was apparently time for a renewal and the game was struggling to financially cover all of the expenses for licensing and development and operations, so Nexon dismissed it.

Arguably the game's direction for design and development was the root problem as some apparent-minority group kept pushing the game into a direction that disappointed most of the community during the last year or two it was online. It's also funny that marketing kept pushing a model that wasn't able to take advantage of the movie starring Scarlett Johansson either during the game's lifetime. There could also have been a more internal issue, like poor management or a poor development cycle too, but there wasn't any outward evidence of that AFAIK.

Again, that's just what I've been lead to believe are the internal reasons for the game's demise; this might not be accurate.

well the live action GITS didnt come out until well after this game died....

this game died in like 2014-2015

But I was aware of a hypercompetitive minority ruining the game. Its why i eventually quit cause i was sick of the hyperaggression.... in QUICKPLAY of all ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ places.

that minority hiveminded clique can be targetted these days in the form of destiny 1 and 2 hunter mains that play a lot of competitive/PVP and cheat/be toxic to ruin the experience for everyone else. They also play CSGO and r6 Siege competitively as well, as another place where these narcissist scumbags congregate in packs.

Theyll often scream ENMASSE with sockpuppets to nerf/buff things so you cant fight back in pvp and they can spam one shot kills the entire comp match like Hunter super spams during Year 2 of destiny 2. (Blade barrage spam/gwisin vest keeping the super up the entire match to one shot you with and you cant see them. the purple smoke was nerfed the following YEAR. but if they wanted OEM nerfed, a armor piece that only gives you an overshield.

so they cant disrespect you with half assed "sniping" by hardscoping the corridor for the next five minutes while waiting for their super to proc within 30 seconds. no other class in the game can do this.... and then ♥♥♥♥♥ when you ♥♥♥♥ on their whiny entitled prick ass. Then wonder why the game sucks now to draw out the naive and uninitiated to attack them until they too leave.

This is a stark reminder to kick these actual ♥♥♥♥♥ out of your communities before they take root with their buddies.

so yeah I have an idea what that "minority" of players was like

Hi, here's how I remeber it:

The game always had a small playerbase and in the end the player counts were so low, they shut it down.

Gameplay was very counter-strike-like and that didn't attract as many players at that time. That was bad for the publisher as he probably hoped for more. At the time (2016/2017) a different kind of gameplay was getting hugely popular - the "hero shooters" (like Overwatch). It seemed like the future.

So they tried to get new players by changing the game mechanics (in an update called "2.0") from the "CS-like" gameplay to "Overwatch-like" gameplay. No more fast kills, no more choosing any character and giving them any weapon. Everyone gets a ton of heath points now and is a locked preset.

This was the opposite of why players were interested in this game. So they just stopped playing en masse, review bombed it, hoping the publisher might reverse the change. Instead it got shut down. It happened fast, even the development team was surprised.

The closure happened in December 2017 and I'm not sure if the game even left the beta.

In conclusion - game was niche, not generating much money > let's turn it upside down and see what happens > community dissapointed, game now dead, property tainted, generating no money > pull the plug.

i dont think the game ever left beta. as in our steam libraries the game is still listed as BETA even though we can still download this game. But this is a lot more helpful since the game had went out with a quiet whimper compared to more recent controversies like Fallout 76.

Just like with FEAR online, another promising niche title but that game needed to embrace PVE instead of catering to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the play nothing but pvp as FEAR was known for its squad based AI making fights interesting and action packed.

no one thinks some fa ggot flying above the map until everyone quits, is "fun". which is why that game died. As well as only 1 pve mission being available.

I just stumbled across this game by accident.
I'm a big fan of GitS (or more mature anime in general), but this looks like a cheap and half-assed cashgrab with some GitS characters randomly thrown into it.

That's not true at all. In fact, none of this is true.

The people that were most vocal about changes were actually the noobs anime weebs who were not very good at the game and were constantly upset that they get their butts kicked by players who are just better than they are.

They were the ones that were complaining that the game did not feel like GITS game and wanted characters to be more defined.

Before the Patch 2.0 that ruined the game, all characters had 100 HP and had the same characteristics, the only different thing about them was their character model and their ability. After the update each character got specific HP and AP, different movement speed and were locked to specific weapons. This also meant that previous combos of character + weapon type/specific weapon became obsolete and impossible to use.

Before you could run and gun, now you had to stop and crouch in order to be accurate, especially with characters like Batou and Borma, who were now locked to ARs and LMGs and their gun control became a pain in the neck.

You sound like the type of person that got their butt kicked and instead of learning the mechanics of the game, decided to blame and insult everyone else who had already learned that and were just enjoying the game.

The population of the game were 20% fans of the GITS franchise and 80% regular FPS players. It was a portion of these 20% that were the vocal minority, thee rest were just regular folks enjoying "just another Asian F2P FPS game".

You can't compare Destiny 2's playerbase to the one in GITS:FA, because they are entirely different demographics, as well as the way PvP in both games played was completely different. Destiny 2 plays like Halo and GITS:FA played like a mixture of Call of Duty and Counter-Strike. If you have played other Korean FPS games like, Alliance of Valiant Arms (A.V.A) or Soldier Front 2, you might see the similarities - they practically used the same template for all 3 of those:

- you can walk, you can sprint
- you can run and gun, but slowing down and crouching provides even greater control, but not many use it, because it's not a real game-changer
- you can modify your weapons with attachments that slightly modify the weapon's performance (it was more prominent in First Assault compared to the others)
- maps employ typical DE_Dust2 3-lane layout for Demolition and simple 2-lane layout with crates, corridors and courtyards for the TDM maps, Payload/Escort had the same long roads with side paths like the Terminal Conquest game mode in First Assault

Literally it's was a generic Asian FPS, nothing extraordinary. The people that played it previously came from all these games - Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, A.V.A, SF2, etc. So most of them were seasoned FPS players and they were only looking at metas and playing the game, they weren't even part of the Discord or the official or Steam forums, they played for a year and most of them quit around the end of the first year when they saw that the game was not improving at all - performance was still as bad, netcode and hitreg were just as bad and all the game added was new weapons, characters and map. Then these good players gradually left and the only ones left were the GITS fans, among them the vocal minority of weebs and the majority of FPS players, who had no complaints and just enjoyed playing the game.

So don't place your blame on people who had nothing to do with the decline and death of the game. It was never good to begin with, it was just somewhat fun. The game died first and foremost because it was generic, because it had poor optimization (performance and netcode), it was written in the Gamebryo engine, that's very old and outdated and it's mostly the developers' fault for choosing it. In one of the Q&A they did back when the game still looked promising and had a somewhat bright future, when asked why they picked Gamebryo over Unreal Engine or something else, they said that it was the only engine they knew how to use and there you have it - the game died, because these developers were not the right developers for the job in the first place.

The game was supposed to originally be a generic Sci-Fi/Futuristic FPS with weapon customization and character abilities, but before launch, they got a licence to use Ghost in the Shell and they quickly implemented GITS assets on top of their already existing generic Sci-Fi shooter. Then the game did poorly, because it was pretty bad and the licence for GITS was not renewed and the game shut down.

So don't start threads like this asking "Why the game died?" and when someone explains you why it died you go and explain yourself why YOU THINK it died. Why ask in the first place if you think you know why it happened?

I play valorant a lot and just keep thinking to myself how much sicker and more clutch stuff was in GITS... RIP dope game.
