Nope. Never were private servers, never will be. Game is dead, move on, maybe cross your fingers that someone will recreate parts of the game in another game engine but expect to never see any of First Assault ever again.

Oh yeaah! There are a ton of private servers, we are all still playing this game, even the firstposter. The servers are very active and we are having tons of fun still playing this game. You can't join though because the servers are private.

Well, duh. What else am I supposed to tell the lazy peons? "Sure, there are plenty of private servers that you can join! You'll just have to pray that you didn't uninstall the last version of the client that Nexon pushed out hours before the official servers were turned off. Once you've checked that you've got that one specific version, then you'll have to reverse engineer the sections of the game engine related to networking, after which you'll download and compile the latest repository from our private GitHub account. Plop in the compiled archives, and then you're good to go until we finally get Ceased and Desisted out of existence and have to move to another hidden account."

If they can't figure that out on their own, then they don't deserve to play on servers that they're not maintaining.

Who cares about creating private servers for discontinued MMO's, right? It's impossible!!!
You can even google this, and you will not find anything about the subject.

It's totally possible but only if the ex-developer publicly releases the server software after the official servers have gone offline. Unfortunately, that seems to have always been the least likely outcome.

I got banned once from a Steam forum just for saying I was upset with a certain game for crashing all the time, and that I thought about looking for an specific patch to fix it, if you know what I mean.
This was understood as piracy and got me banned from that forum, although I've paid for the game in question.
It's a forum policy, I can assure you.

Regarding this game, GITS, as far as I know it's now abandon ware.

AFAIK, an abandonware game is still something you can play, whereas this is more like "reminiscerware". xD
