The Swindle
Screen freezes but game keeps playing? [SOLVED]
Hi, I make it about 15-40 seconds into gameplay, and then the action just freezes, but I can still control my character (I can tell by the sound) and everything aside from the visuals appears to chug along as normal.

I've just upgraded to Windows 10, so I'm hoping it isn't a compatibility issue, I know plenty of people on Win 10 who are playing it just fine.

I've completely uninstalled my old driver and am using the up-to-date WHQL nVidia driver.

My specs are:

i7 920 @ 3.4GHz
12GB RAM
GTX Titan Black
Game is installed to an SSD.
I do have a second monitor, have yet to try disabling it, will try it after this post as I hadn't thought of it until I did a mental checkdown of things I've done.

I've tried in both fullscreen and windowed.

Tried with vsync on and off.

Tried with all settings maxed and minimized.

I've tried running at 2560 x 1440 and 1920 x 1080, though I haven't tried lower yet.

I've tried standing still, going to the upgrade machine, going down to a mission, etc. It seems I can sit in menus forever, but actual gameplay will trigger the freeze well before a minute has passed.

Probably tried a few other things, got a little frustrating and quit for a while.

Also, if I may add a couple other tech issues:

Vsync seems to work sometimes and not so well at other times. I have tried using the Steam overlay for FPS and half the time vsync will properly set itself to 144Hz for my monitor and the other half it'll lock to a weird number like 66, occasionally 60 flat.

Even at 144Hz, the character motion seems... jerky. Is this normal? Like, it seems like frames of animation are missing when jumping, his motions aren't silky smooth like I'd expect. A design decision or indicative of a problem on my end?

Alright, so this became a problem for me too. I can't seem to make it work now. I play the game, and it is exactly as you said, it just freezes and I can't play anymore. It's infuriating to me. How can I fix this?
I also have this problem, and disconnecting from the internet to prevent automatic driver updates did not work. I don't know how to disable driver updates or download the appropriate ones for windows 10. Seriously why is nobody dealing with this?!
Hey so i am also facing the same issue tried disabling automatic updates and reinstalling but still same issue what should i do? Dude i am literally frustrated trying to fix my pc didn't played csgo for a week coz of this bug or whatever any help is appreciated
I thought the fix was the same exact thing but I still can not make it to the end of any game. I freeze every time. I've tried using the drivers Windows 10 installs and I've also completely cleaned them out and installed the latest drivers. The latest drivers do WAY better and I swear disabling real-time protection in the defender helps too but it could be coincidence that I don't freeze when I do it. This is a very infuriating thing being a sim racer because I'll get 20 minutes into a race to freeze. What gets me is it seems like random events inside games are what is causing the freeze. A player joins? Frozen. Someone shoots at you? Frozen. Load a new room? Frozen. Punch on the gas and the smoke starts to show? Frozen. Every single time it lags then comes back from the lag but the FPS is frozen while the audio and the rest of the game continues to function fine. This has never happened before on my computer and has only started since the latest 1903 version of Windows 10.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz
8 GB DDR2 667 MHz RAM
512 GB SSD with 500 MB/sec transfer speeds
Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti low profile version from MSI
Asus Xonar DX 7.1 audio card

Hi there. Old thread, I know, but I'm posting a possible, almost-sure fix.
Had the same problem as OP had in many games, including but not limited to Control, Black Mesa, DOOM 2016, and more. Tried many fixed, didn't work. But, stumbled upon a forum that said to underclock the GPU.

So I did. And it worked! Ever since, I'm getting no "freeze but game continues" stuff.

How to? Simply download MSI Afterburner and install. When you open it, you will see some bars, but you're interested in "Core Clock" and "Memory Clock". Make 'em suffer with a -25 to clock speed in both! (click the zero to type in the desired value.)
Press the confirm (V) button, and load up a game. If you all had the same issue as I did, it should no longer be present.

Hope it helps!

EDIT: the fix is in another steam discussion found here- https://steamcommunity.com/app/257510/discussions/0/154642447926851589/

thank you so much, this settings didn't worked for me, but it took me to the answer that i needed that made absolutely all my games stop crashing, i set core clock to -200 and memory clock to -500 and now it works beautifully
