How to use "Action Hero"

I've loved this rouge-like heist platformer. Too much fun. I'm playing through PS3.

The one issue I've had is my inability to use the "Action Hero" upgrade. This seems like an awesome, bomb-saving skill, but I haven't been able to get the knack of it.

My understanding is "hold [designated button] while running @ glass or reinforced glass". Is there something I'm missing? Any tip would be greatly appreciated!

From my limited use of it, it will allow you to bust window panes in one shot and barge through a door when a bot is on the other side taking him out by pressing Triangle only. ( Normally, you'd have to hit Triangle to open the door and the Square to attack).
