Take it easy, friends. There is no murder at all.
*All below words are my personal understanding, building on that Eve and Hannah are real twins plus no one murdered anyone. The bruise was real, the tattoo was real, the fingerprints were real, everything Eve told at last was true, Florence was by accident, their parents were by accident, Simon was by accident... Perhaps I read it wrong, but I am a glass-half-full man and I like to see the positive side.
*Here is spoiler sub forum so I am not gonna black spoilers out, for eaiser read.

==================================================

Guys, I see a lot of discussions about the plot. Just think some of you went too far on MPD stuff.
I mean, there truly are something unexplainable with twins theory, but I don't want to consider it too complicated. Just understand it straight and simple -- Eve told the truth. I would ignore the minor glitches since it doesn't have to be a perfect story. I am human, Sam is human, human makes mistakes, and that's it.
Of course Sam himself would definitely like to see all those discussions around different possibilities. He made the open ending on purpose - It's not about the story but the player experience. The thing which really matters is that we all like the game, he must feel very happy for this.
Thanks Sam for bringing this great game! And also thanks to Viva Seifert, her performing is fantastic!!

Now I am trying to start explain all my understanding. It does make sense to me. Thanks in advance if you're going to read through. It is very long.

Please reply if you agree or disagree, best if you attach evidence supporting or against this theory :)

==================================================

First of all, we all know the player is Sarah. "SB" asked if she understood "why her mother did what she did".

What did Eve do that Sarah didn't understand?

The MPD supporters may think it doesn't go with twin because Eve didn't kill anyone in that case.

From my view, what Eve did is taking all the remaining responsibilities and letting Hannah ran away; Eve may went into jail; Sarah may not have parents and be raised by someone else, which probably lead her to hate her mother. And the game is to reveal her the truth.

Who is "SB"? Perhaps Sam Barlow, or just "somebody" which might be Eve's fake identity. She asked Sarah to come over the road, because 41 years ago Eve came over the road to see her reflection after "witch" dead, and it turned out that Hannah was just another witch. Eve still loves Hannah a lot though. But she doesn't want Sarah suffer same thing.

What did Hannah and Eve feel about each other?

It would be a big topic.

They are twin sisters with love-hate relationship. But Hannah hates Eve more, and Eve loves Hannah more.

No doubt Hannah appeared on June 25 and June 30; and Eve for June 18, June 27, July 1 and July 3. July 2 doesn't matter much, but I am sure it was Hannah trying acting like Eve. Notice that on July 2 Hannah wore her wedding ring, but on July 3 it's gone. Hannah used to lend it to Eve, to pretend to be her. But she ran away after July 2, and it was Eve on the last day.

Going through their testimonies separately, you will see them very different. For example, different attitude on sex, different preference of beverage, etc. I would like to explain something deeper.

Eve believed immediately when Hannah told her killing Simon was by accident.
On the first day she said "Someone must have done something to him or there must have been some kind of accident".
On Jun 27 when detective asked about the murder, her first reaction was "You think it's murder? ", that is a strong evidence that it was an accident in her mind. Who would doubt it was not a murder seeing a bloody body with throat cut hidden down to cellar?

And you will find many clues showing that Eve loved Hannah very much.

"It's a palindrome. It reads the same backwards as forwards. It doesn't work if you mirror it through, it's not quite symmetrical." (she liked the mirror-liked things)
"I wanted to look like my reflection."
"I guess she broke the rules. Or maybe they think she did something bad. Maybe it wasn't her fault." (she knew that was accident)
"She looks scared, not guilty." (she believed Hannah wasn't meant to kill Simon)
"And then I decided to drive back. I had decided that she was more important to me than Simon." (she loved her)

She also felt sorry for Hannah losing Simon: "she was a widow from her twenties", despite it was about Florence, the same to Hannah. Don't forget they were only 28 when the story happened in 1994.

On the other hand, Hannah always thought Eve was a trouble. She hated the swapping life. She wanted to be the only one in sunshine - but she just couldn't do things herself. So she used Eve and then betrayed. She loved Eve in a sense, but definitely not as much as Eve loved her.

"I guess I didn't like the present." (she hates mirrors)
"The reflection isn't as good. It's the perfect mirror for someone who doesn't like to look at their own reflection." (she doesn't wanna see Eve anymore)
"Simon wanted to call her Ava after his nana. But I didn't want her to have a symmetrical name." (she hates anything like mirror, sysmmetrical or even palindrome, that's why it came Sarah)
...
"It felt like it was just me and Simon, for that moment, just the two of us."
"It was wonderful to be in a hotel, away from home, just alone together."
"So you see it's always been complicated between me and Simon. It's never just been the two of us. There's always been pressure."
"Well... my friend, Eve. I mean, she was a friend when I was a kid. She was always more popular with the boys and I used to hate her for it. I mean, really hate her sometimes."
"Everyone loves Simon. He was so... nice. To everyone." (to her and to Eve)

See? Hannah expressed her hate and jealousy about Eve. It's understandable. She was the princess, she had a normal life till Eve appeared. She had to hurt herself when Eve got hurt; The one whom man liked was always Eve; Eve slept with someone but Hannah was the one got punched; Hannah didn't even lost virginity through a normal way due to Eve ran too fast with that Carl.
All these ended up with Simon, Hannah broke the "stupid" (from our view) rules -- Eve was more like just a tool Hannah used to get boys (or to cheat at exam), and finally Hannah no longer needed Eve once she got Simon.
In return, after that Hannah got miscarriage and infertile, Simon cheated on her, made Eve pregnant, and even wanted to divorce. All these drove Hannah crazy.

All in all Hannah was the one killed Simon and Eve was the one wiping the ♥♥♥.
The first one reporting missing was Eve.
The first one reporting death was also Eve (notice that police didn't know Simon dead on June 25, it was just a routine callin. June 27 Eve "found" the body and reported, that's why it was night time in the video).
The last one stayed for judgment was still Eve.

I think on June 30 Hannah truly felt regret about fighting with Eve after recalling the childhood friendship. She knocked "loveU", she thought she shouldn't do all those just for Simon having affair with Eve, however Eve was her sister, her family. At last she said she cared the baby, where Simon could live on. She said "Our baby", it didn't mean she and Simon but she and Eve.

Mistery of the sisters' parents' death.

Many people think Eve killed them. I don't.

The first time (June 25) Hannah talked about her parents' death:

"I felt so guilty. If I had still been at home, maybe I could have done something. I don't know."
...
"They said it didn't matter if I could cook or not, just don't poison the kids!
So you see it's always been complicated between me and Simon.
It's never just been the two of us. There's always been pressure."

and the second time she said
"I mean the police had no reason to think it was suspicious. They lived alone... And no one had any reason to hurt them."

Guilty? She didn't feel guilty at all. She thought Eve was guilty. Eve was living(secretly) in the attic at that time. Hannah believed Eve was responsible for their parents' death, or even it was Eve who poisoned them to push Hannah moving back (like what many of you think). Anyway Eve escaped for a while after the case, so long that the bodies got corrupted before Hannah knew the news.

But I don't think Eve poisoned them. She said, she was sick, she slept through and found them dead.
Eve had been calm during all those conversations but then became very emotional at the part of their parents' death. She seemed very sad.

I understand someone would consider that "But the police believed that's what happened. They never even looked in the attic." a mocking. However, I would rather consider it as a expression of disappointment/dissatisfaction about police work.
She escaped because she knew police will search over the house, but when she moved back, the attic seemed nobody had entered. Same as Hannah, Eve doesn't believe that her father would eat death cap too, something must be wrong, the policemen should investigate more, but they closed the case even without completely searching the house.

Eve didn't know the truth of their death, just guessing her father was in sick that day so it was her mother cooking, cooking his favorite mushroom, tragically put wrong thing. She told her suspicion during the thematic apperception test (telling story from picture), and pointed out that it was sad.

I updated another possibility that Eve accidentally killed them. Check it out here:

What about Simon?

Simon is very simple, perhaps the simplest symbol to understand.

He lived on making mirrors. He died on a mirror he made by himself.

Eric gave him a watch for their 10th wedding anniversary, but he cheated on his wife. Finally the watch was used as part of alibi for who killed him.

That's Simon. He is the mirror, to reflect how the sisters facing themselves. All his existence just made this story more ironic. This is my favorite part of this game. Again, good work, Sam!

Remember how Eve introduced herself to the police officer on the first day?
"My name is Hannah. H-A-N-N-A-H. It's a palindrome. It reads the same backwards as forwards. It doesn't work if you mirror it through, it's not quite symmetrical. But, well, well you get the idea."

For god's sake, this must be how she used to start the conversation when she was 15 to 17. I bet, every single time, when Hannah asks Eve to seduce some boy, Eve does it this way, palindrome trick. At least it worked with Simon, and Simon learned it. That's how Simon tried to hit on her 10 years later.

I don't know how many players noticed these details, but actually I think Eve was the one who loved Simon more, way more.

Both the sisters mentioned Simon in testimony, but Eve described way more detailed. Eve cherished his glasses, his patience, his face... And you see, what Hannah told was just the dance -- when she finally got rid of Eve, and the stupid chocolate in their first date -- she just couldn't forget candy. What a b--ch.

When being asked what is the worst thing in life, Hannah repeated twice about miscarriage and parents' death; it was Eve who said seeing Simon's dead body -- it made her realizing her beloved sister killed her beloved man.

Eve always thought she deserved to be with Simon. She felt guilty, but she released soon. Simon hadn't told her that he was married, he didn't wear the wedding ring, Simon was also responsible for this affair. That's why Eve said "I've never taken anything from anyone".

About the marriage, I guess Hannah just wanted to win something to prove herself, and to get away from Eve. Eve wanted a marriage too, she said the word "church" a lot in different videos.

After all, they got back to one team to cover Simon's death. If they didn't, the court would not call that an accident, Hannah would go into jail, Eve had no identity to raise Sarah, so they chose this way... Eventually failed though. and Hannah ran, she was the weak one.
I am not telling that Hannah betrayed again, but her little sister always loves her more than she loves back.

The Othello mini game is a metaphor for the sister fighting against each other trying to take more from the other side of mirror, and the achievement tells there is no winner nor loser in this story.

It is sad, but it is not dark. Eve didn't murder anyone.

==================================================

Again, there are somewhere imperfect in my theory, and I'd rather take them as the script's mistake.

It seems way more elegant than the infinite conspiracisms -- "fake something up", "fake something up to fake something else up", "tattoo is fake", "bruise is fake", "the mistake is fake, on purpose to mislead you to the fake fakes"...

You can explain everything "technically possible" with a MPD theory, just a bit ugly. Like this:

"I got you", "that's illusion, you're trapped", "that's illusion of I falling into your illusion trap", "that's a higher layer illusion that your double-illusion trap worked"...

Come on, are we reading Naruto?

Timeline
(as I read)

Florence loved kids, she and her husband had a sweet conversation before he died in a war. They wanted to call their first kid Eve, but they couldn't have it. She became a midwife. She didn't marry again.
Hannah/Eve's father and mother had worked in Eric's front shop, or it had not been Eric's asset at that time, anyway.

July 17 1966, the twin, Hannah and Eve was born in Portsmouth. Florence was there helping as midwife. Florence lied to their mother "one of them died", so that she managed to steal the baby. Florence named the girl Eve.

Florence had written everything in her diary.

Eve grew up locking in Florence's, across the street she can see her real parents' house through window. Hannah played outside a lot, they saw each other, but thought that was reflection, until July 17 1971, Hannah had a party hat but Eve didn't.

Eve envied Hannah's freedom, she cut hair to copy Hannah's appearance. She could only read book, or watch TV sometimes. She read Florence's diary secretly.

In 1974, Eve was 8, Florence slipped down from stairs. Eve burned the diary and visited Hannah, Hannah hid Eve in attic, there was a giant dollhouse. They read and played there. They started swapping identity, made a list of rules, going outside acting as Hannah in turn, and bringing food for the other. The parents didn't know there was one more girl in house, they bought a cat due to noise of the sister's knock codes, thought it was rats.

In 1978, Eve and Hannah were 12. They ran away from home to see Bob Dylan's London concert(according to http://www.bobdylan.com/us/events this is the only possible year). The cab driver called police because they seemed too young and had only coins. The police brought Hannah back to Portsmouth, and her mother picked her up. For some reason Eve was not discovered at the time.

About in the same age, The sister's bodies became very synchronized, even the starts of period were on the same day. They still had very diffenrent personalities though. Eve could not drive well; Hannah was very shy, weren't so popular between boys in school.

In 1981, they were 15, Hannah had a crush on Carl, a local boy in a band. She asked Eve to seduce him, Eve lost virginity then, they date the boy in turn. There was a period that Hannah couldn't have sex with Carl because it would look very weird back to virgin again. Eve used a hairbrush to break this situation.

Carl dumped her(them) after half a year. They started using Ouija board praying for true love. In the following one or two years, there were some boys they shared, under the rules. Eve was always the first player though.

In 1983, they started part time job at Eric's. They met Simon there, and both loved him. Eve asked for the first date. It was late 1983, they went to see Risky Business (this movie was released in August). They shared the first date. In the second date Eve let Simon kissed her, and then Hannah slept with him in the next time (about September).

After Hannah told Simon that she had a baby, their parents had a meeting and decided they should marry. They had a simple wedding in Brighton (late 1983 or early 1984), no honeymoon travel. Simon dropped off school and started full-time at Eric's, and they moved in Simon's parents' house. There was only one spare room and apparently Eve could not follow.

Eve stayed living in attic. Without Hannah's cover, Eve started using wig when she sneaked out. Hannah was getting bigger, Eve was very into the rule of being same, she got anxious that they couldn't keep alignment any longer. To copy Hannah, Eve started having sex with random people. She didn't get pregnant but an STD.

Simon wanted to call the baby Ava but Hannah hated symmetrical things so she altered it to Sarah. To make Eve comfortable she told Eve that they will get their own place as soon as possible.

In the end of spring(April or May), 1984, Hannah got miscarriage and it left her infertile. She had no action of moving back to her parents' house. Eve was depressed and was sick.

In summer 1984, the sisters' parents died of food poisoning. Eve found the body, and scared off. Days later the neighbor smelt it and called Hannah up, then they found the body, called police. Police didn't completely search the house, so Eve got able to move back in later.

Both the sisters attended the funeral, dressing in black with veil. Hannah inherited the house and moved back with Simon. Simon's father Doug found a dinner lady position in school for Hannah.
Eve expected to start the old rule again, but Hannah didn't let her out around Simon. They lived like this for about 6 months.

Early 1985, Eve couldn't stand it any longer, she moved out, rented a bedsit, and started singing in bars to earn money. Eve had no identity, felt like walking dead, she wrote the songs. She got a tattoo of snake and apple, marking her leave from "Eden".
Hannah's life returned to peace.

They lived like this for 9 years.

February 1994. Simon found Eve in a bar. He was amazed by the likeness. He started hitting on Eve, guessed her name from tattoo, and used the palindrome trick as opening. This is the first time Eve being herself, she enjoyed. She felt guilty for a while, but she wasn't sure if he was Simon, and anyway Simon was also responsible.

In the same month, Eve got a speeding ticket, at that time Hannah was supposed to be at work.

Weeks later, Simon took Eve back to the house and confessed about his marriage. Eve confirmed he was Simon. They had sex, and Eve got pregnant.

After that, they had it again and again, in other cities. Simon told Hannah he was in conference.

At the beginning Eve thought it was irregular period, but after 3 months she realized that she was pregnant.

June 17 1994, on their birthday, Eve told Hannah she had a baby with her boyfriend known from pub. Hannah jealoused, she wanted to join raising the baby. Hannah told Eve that she wanted to help more, to tell Simon, to let Eve move in. Eve refused.

In the evening, about 8PM, Simon waited at home and took out the mirror as present, it was good so far. And Hannah happily told Simon about her twin sister, about the pregnancy.
Simon had been wondering why Eve looked so similar to Hannah since months ago and he finally understood the answer from Hannah's news. He couldn't restrain the shock from face, and Hannah immediately knew everything.

Hannah got mad, kicked Simon off the house, called Eve over. Eve arrived at 9. They began fighting, Eve left Hannah a bruise and Hannah ripped off Eve's wig. They both felt tired, Eve took their car and drove away, right up to Glasgow. It took about 6 to 7 hours over 450 miles.

Midnight same day, Simon returned to the house. Hannah was waiting there with Eve's clothes and wig. Simon misrecognized her as Eve. They talked. Simon took another mirror, said he wanted to be with Eve. Hannah smashed the second mirror, revealed her identity, then they fought, she killed him by accident, shocked, sitted there till next day.

June 18 1994, Saturday, about 3AM, Eve hit a cab in Glasgow. The driver took Eve to the hospital, checked body, confirmed baby was OK. Eve fell asleep the moment she was back in the car. She woke up at 8, called back to the house but no answer. She refilled gas and started driving back.

Eve arrived the house at 3PM, saw the scene. Hannah told truth, and the two made the plan, they cleaned up together, took shower to wash off blood, answered Eric's call saying hadn't see Simon. Eve did something on the watch to ensure that cops would know the death time was June 17 midnight.

7PM, June 18 1994, Eve went to cops -- Hannah was too shy to do that. Eve used Hannah's identity and reported Simon's missing. Notice that the first time Eve said she waited all day on Saturday.

June 25 1994, the police called Hannah over, asked questions and took fingerprints. Hannah hinted that the Simon might died somehow.

June 27 1994, Eve reported Simon's body as they planned before, so the case was transferred to homicide team. The previous policeman remembered Hannah's face and made her a cup of tea. Eve took it without sugar.
During the questioning, Eve took the test, she told 4 stories, basing on her childhood, her parents' death, her homewrecking with Simon, her sister after Simon's death.
Notice that Hannah moved to Eve's bedsit that day, they both stayed there for a while.

The cops searched the house, found 3rd person's fingerprints and hairs in bedroom later. Eve's plan was partially basing on the assumption that police would not completely search the house, a big mistake.

June 30 1994, Hannah again. Called up by police. She acted nervous when she was asked about fingerprints and hairs. Detective then asked whether Simon had affairs. Hannah denied. She exposed the existence of Eve soon. She reviewed the childhood with Eve, felt guilty about fighting with Eve and killing Simon, then tapped "LoveU".

July 1 1994. Eve came. She had to come since the detective asked about guitar last time, Hannah could not play guitar.
Detective asked again what happened on Saturday, Eve rehearsed the answer. There were several places different with Hannah's version, such as "you" turned to "I" for unlocking door, not mentioning Simon's parents' names... She was nervous as well, and then split coffee accidentally, exposed the tattoo.
Eve showed that she was addicted to coffee, at least a cup a day. Detective felt more suspicious for the tea with sugar days. She also acted a very different attitude about sex.
Later detective showed the speeding ticket, she was supposed to be at work at the time. Eve didn't remember. She admitted the dirty weekend in Oxford. She played guitar and sang the depressive song.

July 2 1994, the last time Hannah appeared. She tried act like Eve, but she couldn't hold off. The conversation was short due to Hannah freaked out.

Detective was pretty sure they were twins. That night Hannah ran away forever, Eve stayed to win some time. She tapped "Byd Hannan" (which was supposed "Bye Hannah") the next day.

July 3 1994. Eve showed, told all the truths. The game didn't tell what happened to her after that (very possibly got prisoned), but her baby was born later and had grown up.

June 16 2015. Sarah explored the video clips. The end.
This date is just before Eve/Hannah's birthday, it must mean something that I didn't figure out.

Thanks. Makes sense. I was looking all day for a proper explaination as to how the pieces of the puzzle connect together.
Edit: what about the hack.nfo file?

8 years living in an attic without being found? Far too much of a stretch for me.

I also think there's far too much attention to detail in general in this game for the bits which don't line up to be dismissed as "mistakes".

Thanks for reply. I don't insist the twin theory is the proper answer, but I like it most. The contrast of the two makes the story beautiful in eastern way - Hannah got all the sunshine but she was as weak as flower; Eve lived in dark but she was as tough as mushroom. They fought. They separated. Both of them didn't have real happy life, and ended up not so well - Hannah lost identity, Eve lost freedom. Nevertheless, they've got a weak light in the darkness - they made up, found love back together, completed each other's soul. I think it's a happy ending in spirit.

For your updated question, honestly, I don't know. The only obvious clue "One for the mums here" was saluting Eve and Hannah. I am not going to overinterpret it more, but I saw a theory that Eve gave birth to twins, and SB might be Sarah's brother, I think it's possible. Or perhaps he is the detective's kid? Who knows.

10 years, actually. Eve joined in 1974, their parents died in 1984.

This is ridiculous but I am treating it as a part of world view of this game... In which universe hiding in an attic without being discovered by the house owner is common, where polices could take 2 girls in and then peacefully send only 1 girl out. LOL.

You know, there are some stories telling a kindhearted alien guy who helps people around with red-blue underwear, who fakes himself as a reporter and nobody could recognized him just because those glasses, who is almost totally invincible but a small piece of stone from his homeland can suck him off...
Sometimes a guy got tattoo all over his body to remember a stupid map and then robbed a bank on purpose to get into jail and rescue his sure-dead brother...
And you can see the super advanced AI feeds human and fools human mind in virtual world just for using them as batteries, because they lost their damned solar power... It doesn't even care how much energy consumption is needed for calculating the virtual thing.

See, there is full of nonsense everywhere, but classics are still classics. We accept them as long as the core-idea itself is creative enough and the makers tried hard to make it interesting.

:) Thanks. I read your post yesterday. It's very fun to see all the possibilities. I think I bought the game for 5 bucks just like seeing an ordinary linear movie, and you guys tripled the fun by sharing different views - some are very persuasive.

BTW I've never thought about 3some between Carl, Eve and Hannah, it seemed to be a great idea for h-doujin book!

Ok, 10 years. The point remains. I really don't think that dismissing certain issues in order for them to fit your theory is a particularly sound methodology, but if it works for you then go for it. Personally I go for "balance of probabilities" given as many of the facts as I know, and for me the MPD theory is just more probable than the twins theory.

If I could uprate comments, the OP and follow-up post would be uprated.

Just one thing, from the two quotes you give, maybe she repeats something she heard her parents say? What if it actually was a double suicide by the parents?

I totally understand. It depends on the personal preference thinking which way sounds weirder than the other. In MPD theory everything goes "technically possible" and seems not that elegant; in twins theory most things get better look just leaving several huge bug.

Thanks. :)

For your question about double-suicide, I think it's possible, just missing motivation. You reminded me to review Eve and Hannah's testimonies, and then I feel a chill from a new possibility.

Fact 1: Hannah told that "They'd gone to bed feeling ill, thinking it was flu or something.".
How the hell did she know that? I mean her parents lived "alone", she was staying at Simon's parents' place at the time, and the next time she saw them were dead bodies.
If it was they told her that they weren't comfortable by telephone before they went to bed. Why didn't Hannah call back the next day? Normally when you know your parents are sick you will sure check them frequently, right?
My conclusion would be: on the funeral or something, Eve told Hannah they didn't seem right in the night before their death. So far it is same with my original theory. And then the change comes:

Fact 2: Hannah had better knowledge about Death Cap than Eve.
Hannah said "They have a skirt around the cap. My dad taught me that.";
In Eve's turn it was "he used to take us picking with him and he taught us how to recognise them"
This implied that it was Hannah who really learned Death Cap, Eve only learned a little from the diary. Clearly their dad didn't even know there was two kids, and he wouldn't teach that twice, just like Hannah's virginity with Carl thing.

Now let's see back, in my previous thinking it goes like this:

Eve's father got ill somehow, and went to bed alone. Her mother cooked the mushroom for dinner, but put death cap in due to she didn't know it. Both of them ate the mushroom and became sick, and then died. Eve saw them the next morning and scared away.

It's still valid, but after arranging clues another explanation floated up.

The illness was true flu or something, not the symptom of poison. Not only the father but both her parents got flu and went to bed.
Eve noticed that they were sick, and decided show up cooking for them.
Her parents was asleep, didn't see her. Anyway it would be OK if they saw her -- Hannah had already had miscarriage at the time, it's easy to pretend to be Hannah coming back helping.
Finally, it was Eve putting wrong mushroom, not her mother. Eve had never wanted to kill them, just didn't know how to exactly recognize death cap.

How do you like this version?
