Download Link In Description of this Video

How to Install

  • Download Nocx's Modified Streaming Assets from the description in the video link above.

  • Extract the files/file folder from "Nocx_Modified_StreamingAssets.7z"using WinZip or WinRAR. The extracted folder should be called "StreamingAssets"

  • Go to the local file folder of Her Story. You can do this by right-clicking on the game in your Steam Library, then click on 'Properties'. Go to the Local Files Tab, then click the button 'Browse Local Files'. This should bring up the game's folder in Windows Explorer. Note: If you are not using Steam, you can also right click the game launch/shortcut, then click "Open file location" to reach the game's local file folder.

  • In the game's local file folder, go into the folder titled "HerStory_Data"

  • In the HerStory_Data folder, there should be a folder called "StreamingAssets". You want to replace the videos in this folder with the videos enclosed in the folder extracted from Nocx_Modified_StreamingAssets.7z. You can do this by copying the "StreamingAssets" folder you extracted from Nocx_Modified_StreamingAssets.7z and pasting it into the HerStory_Data folder.

  • Windows should ask you if you want to replace the StreamingAssets folder. Click "Yes"

  • Windows should notify you that there is a conflict due to files being the same name and give you multiple options. At the bottom left corner of the box there should be a check box that says "Do this for the next 273 conflicts" Check this box, then click on the option "Move and Replace"

  • Once they are done being replaced, run the game and enjoy!

PS. If it doesn't work for you, I recommend reading the How it works section and the FAQ to troubleshoot the issue and understand what is going on. If you had a codec pack installed previously, it may have made changes that have not been restored, regardless of the codec pack being uninstalled. The FAQ tells you how to revert these changes, check for official Microsoft codec updates for Windows Media Player, and install Microsoft's Mpeg4s Decoder DMO, and the missing required formats from the official decoder manufacturer (it's always possible that a Windows Update conflict has prevented this. Can't tell without being at a computer first hand :/)

How it works:

This is essentially a repackage/modified version of the video files included in Her Story for PC. These modified files will play in game for Windows users who experience a blank screen/ no video playback when they click a video.

The reason some users on Windows get a blank screen/no video in the game when they try to play a video is because the Windows game's videos triggers a DirectShow filter/codec that cannot decode the High profile H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC encoded video files the game includes (Her Story uses the AVPRO Windows Media Player Unity Plugin - a DirectShow API based plugin) . .......However, the DIVX codec that installed with every copy of Windows Media Player can (and by extension every copy of Windows!) It's just not flagged by the High Profile H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC encoding/DirectShow filter by default. This problem is applicable to any DirectShow based application trying to play a High Profile H.264 encoded video on Windows Vista/7 and sometimes Windows 8/8.1.

So basically, I have modified all the video files' headers from the Windows release of Her Story so that DirectShow utilizes the DIVX codec to decode as opposed to the codec triggered by the original video files. This is a better/safer solution than installing K-Lite (Essentially bloated pack of codec software that can cripple other programs and disable necessary codec filters, I highly advise against it) or other codec packs because the changes are easily reversible. No registry entries or DirectShow filter changes/disabling is required (those type of changes can be time consuming and hard to reverse). Just replace the games' packaged video files with my modified ones and boom! Your done. Your computer hasn't changed any settings, installed any new unwanted programs or accidentally crippled any other software :)

FAQ:

Q: Why did the developer encode his videos using a High Profile H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC encoding.?

A: I don't know. Probably because it is a very good encoding method. Heck, it's arguably the best in regards to compression in relation to quality retention. A beter question is why would he do it when the AVPRO Windows Media Player Plugin used by the game states multiple times in it's documentation that DirectShow video decoder flagged by that format (and by extenstion the plugin) in Windows Vista/7 and sometimes 8.1 cannot decode them?

Q: Have the videos been re-encoded?

A: No. Merely the header of the video files has been changed to flag the DIVX DirectShow Codec/Filter. The DIVX DirectShow Filter can decode the High Profile H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC encoded files. The videos are still encoded in the same format.

Q: If these are High profile H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC encoded video, why does my computer say the files are .avi?

A: The .avi format is not an encoding method, it's a container. It can hold many different types of video encodings.

Q: Will this work for Mac?

A: No. Haven't tested it but I can say that with a high amount of certainty. Quicktime doesn't come packaged with DIVX codecs, so these videos shouldn't play.

Q: Why not just use a codec pack like K-Lite?

A: You can if you want. I'm not going to tell you what to do. If you want to install a bunch of programs you don't need and make changes to your codecs/DirectShow filters, only to find out you have a problem with another application or have a bunch of random programs popping up that slow down your computer, then go ahead. Just know that uninstalling a codec pack does not mean you have reset your codec filters or re-enabled the filters that were disabled, and this can cause problems with other programs.

Q: Why is the download link embedded in a youtube Mario Kart video?

A: It was the only video on my channel, and I find installation videos boring and needlessly long.Due to Steam's/Valve's anti-phishing measures, I cannot embed a direct download link into this post.

Q: Will you do a similar pack for Mac OS X Mavericks users that are experiencing a similar problem?

A: Probably not. I haven't looked at the issue, don't have access to a Mac right now, and haven't looked at the Mac version's plugin documentation (the plugin used on Mac is VTP 2.0).

Q: I copied your mod to the folder, but it still doesn't solve my issue. What can I do now?

A: If you tried codec packs in the past, they may have disabled or changed codec packs and codec filters. Uninstalling a codec pack does not mean you reverted the codec changes/ codec filter changes. You can try this tool [www.codecguide.com] to revert the changes. It does not require an install. Just run the executeable, hit Preferred decoders, and make sure they are all set to Microsoft. Once they are, make sure you save/apply the changes. You can also check the MS Codec Tweaks section of the program and make sure they are all enabled. Try disabling them all, (checking all the boxes) applying, then re-enabling them (unchecking all the boxes). You will have to restart you computer for changes to take effect. The specific decoder my mod video files use is the Mpeg4s Decoder DMO. If you still have problems after this, I recommend turning auto updates on in Windows Media Player, and updating Windows Media Player. Guides to do this are in the answer to the question I marked with a *

Q: How do I revert my codec changes?

A: Please see the answer above this question.

*Q: I'm pretty sure I reverted the codec/codec filter changes, and it still doesn't work. What else can I do?

A: Make sure your Windows Media Player is up to date. Enabling auto updates in Windows Media Player allows Windows to install codecs/decoders automatically, including the Mpeg4s decoder DMO format "DIVX" (the one my modified videos use). To do this follow these official Microsoft instructions [windows.microsoft.com]. I recommend enabling auto-updates before checking for updates manually. You can also use Windows Media Player(which is a DirectShow player) to check the codec decoders installed and used. Please refer to this guide under the section Video codecs[support.microsoft.com] to see which decoder DMO DirectShow is set to use. The specific one you are looking for is the "Mpeg4s Decoder DMO". Beside it you should see in the format section "DIVX"

Q: How do I check if the proper codecs/decoder is being used?

A: Please refer to the answer to the above this question

Q: Okay...I had a codec pack, but I have reverted my filters, reverted my MS decoder tweaks, got Windows Media Player up to date, and it still isn't working. What can I do now?

A: Go to DivX's official website and install their player. It will install the decoder for use in DirectShow/Windows Media Player. If the video problem still isn't fixed after this, some registry entries may have been affected. I cannot help you at this point, and I feel very sorry for you.

I have run into the same issue with mp4 videos not playing on a project I'm working on. What did you use to modify the video files' headers so that DirectShow utilizes the DIVX codec?

Please utilize the FAQ section and make sure Windows Media Player is up to date. There is a link to an official Microsoft support article about video codecs, and how to check them in Windows Media Player in the FAQ. The FAQ also tells you what to look for in the codec section of Windows Media Player.

If you have installed a codec pack (in an attempt to fix a blank video issue) prior to downloading this fix, there is a section on the FAQ which links to a portable (no installation required) tool that can help you uninstall the codec pack and revert it to Windows default.

Keep in mind, I have not tested my fix on Windows 10 yet. I have only tested on Vista/7/8/8.1
