Her Story

Her Story

View Stats:
"Yes" and "No"
There are 8 clips that are only accessible through searching with direct quotations, either with "yes" or with "no".

If you type "yes", you get 4 clips with her saying a single word: yes. Same thing with "no".

If you search for the words yes or no without quotation marks, you get a plethora of results, but none of which are the elusive single-word clips in question. Since the single-word clips have no other searchable terms, they are basically unfindable unless you type those exact search terms: "yes" or "no".

There's a readme file on the game's desktop that says if you are working with a direct transcript (which you don't have) you can pull clips by putting her words in quotes.

This doesn't work with fragments from the clip, which means that you must put the ENTIRE clip's quote between quotation marks to get a direct result. I tested this out with a 7-second clip with two simple sentences, and it seems to work.

Here's what I don't get though: who would think to put "yes" or "no" with quotation marks as search terms? How could you even assume that would net you different results? Every other clip in the game features a few words that are shared with other clips, allowing thorough researchers to find pretty much everything themselves. But I could not imagine anyone finding these 8 last clips to 100% the game without the help of the random search function you unlock after "beating" the game, or using a guide obviously. I am glad I gave up trying to finish the database before logging out, cause I would have never found them.

Does anyone have any insight on this? It's the only part of the game that's really bothering me.

EDIT FOR CLARITY:

I think the intention of the quotation marks system was exactly the way it works with Google. For example, if I Google "Star Wars The Force Awakens is great", the first search result is a news article with that exact text in the headline. Google searches for the whole string as a single term. If you search Star Wars The Force Awakens is great without any quotations, the first result is Admit It: Star Wars The Force Awakens Stinks.

Try it, I'm not even joking.

The idea is that without quotes, Google searches for every word individually without the need for them to be in an exact sequential order. I think this is what Her Story was supposed to feature, but for whatever reason, it doesn't work properly. Disappointing really, since searching is the main game mechanic.

I thought the game gave enough clues to figure out how to access those 8 video clips.

Most people end up finding the lie detector clips by simply searching for "Hannah". That was the first question she was given and she screws up by giving the answer in full, as opposed to only saying "yes" or "no". She even apologises afterward, and if you then search for "sorry", you can find the next clip where she says she gets the rules now. From then, it's not a big leap of imagination to search for "Yes." and "No." even though the satisfaction of finding them is somewhat ruined by not being able to hear the questions.

BLANK is a part of the creator's design of the game. The dev intetionally gave that user tag to all videos to ensure players have access to all video clips or any last videos players have trouble finding. If not, it wouldn't be there

Admin_Random is also a part of the design, but it's still not what I'm talking about. Specifically, the ability to put quotation marks around a search term seems to be a broken system, or at least only useful in this specific circumstance. The question is, why does it exist in the first place?

Hmm, interesting theory! Thanks for the reply! But.... the person taking the lie detector test is Eve, so I figured that her mistake was that she called herself the wrong name, perhaps out of habit of always pretending to be Hannah. I think you're on the right track though, but I still don't get how a person can make a leap of logic to even search for "sorry" instead of just sorry. If you search for "the", you'll get no results, since there are no clips with just that word in it. But the readme doesn't explain this! So I remain confused.

I'm not sure I understand. The quotation marks is used for words connected in a sentence or part of a sentence.
My guess is that those lie detector clips need this specific quotation marks serach terms since there's too many other video clips that also have the words "yes" and "no".
Sure, it's not obvious but then again, those video clips are pretty irrelevant and probably more like easter eggs. The woman doesnt give anything useful at all but simply say "yes" and "no" throughout.

Yeah I just figured it out logically. I found all the other videos, puzzled out what the videos just before and just after the missing ones were, and then deduced what the missing ones must be. The fact they gave us the quotation mark option at all, when I'd never used it before, was also a hint on how to approach the problem.
Kind of a fun puzzle, if you ask me.
