Gun & ammo?

Is the gun operative without the ammo? And is the ammo there just to be another 'item'?

Reason I ask is because I had used the ammo earlier and throught my gun was useless now, but by only having the gun I still fended off bandits, and other events. Even the events say something like 'One shot from the rifle scared the bandits away'... and I don't even have any ammo?

Is this a bug, oversight? You can use the rifle without ammo sometimes.

Gun and Ammo are two seperated items, but there is case you can use Ammo to repair you Gun once it broken. The Gun is always fully loaded ;)

Oh, well that would have been great to know. :P Cause sometimes when I send out someone with a gun and ammo they come back with the gun but no ammo... I just figured 'they used the ammo up'. But that makes more sense if they are separate items then. Maybe make the ammo an ammobox or something so it's more clear.
