\why do you automatically lose if Ted dies?

I had a large stockpile but because he never came back from his expedition my other characters apparently gave up on life and I guess died? They were happy and healthy. I was on day 43.

I had...
A med kit
A shotgun + ammo
Cards
Chess
A map
A radio
6 cans of food
10 bottles of water
A boyscouts handbook

My map and flashlight were exhausted.

(Ted had the briefcase and gas mask)

...I feel like the game should continue even if Ted dies as the expedition survival is pretty random.

I think it's because he's the author or the journal, so he is the main the protagonist. You just have to learn to put Ted first.
