Also pretty sure the studio has now been put to work on the next Civ game instead.
All this to say, it's going to be a while.
And even then, it won't be by the same people.
Then there was right from the start that signs that 2k or Firaxis had zero intention of finishing the game. Hulk / Bruce was a half baked character that you couldn't befriend, got almost zero conversation lines and right from the beginning felt only half done and never added to. All of the other characters added dealt with the vampire threat whether it made sense for them to or not.
And once (and if) you made it through that, and farmed enough resources to try multiple builds for a character you were faced with horrendous RNG that was tied to save states. So you would roll 10-20 times on a card see what you get, reload try a different type of card do it again, and if you didn't get the effect you were looking for you would have to run out play a match to reset the save state and try again. And you would have to do that with every single character and build you wanted to try felt more and more daunting.
They added denuvo so we couldn't cheat in a single player game and artificially increase our resources to reduce the grind, just so we could play the game try out builds and enjoy the mechanics they added. And when people found ways around Denuvo (not to pirate but to cheat in resources) they updated it breaking mods. Achievements were often broken on DLC launch (still haven't gotten some for DP or Morbius)
I loved this game but the more I had to fight it just to play it the less interested I was in it. It never had to be a commercial failure. It could even have become a cult classic had the devs worked with the players. Slowed down the roll out of the DLCs to build excitement and bring in new players with each character added. And most importantly exorcised itself from the pay to win model it was built upon.
Sadly I think they knew their license wasn't going to last long enough. They needed to try to get as much money as quickly as possible and just move on. It genuinely felt like the devs had a passion for this game but their hands were tied. It was doomed to be abandoned ware from the beginning.
Yeah, Jake Solomon left the team last year. Was a mega bummer when I heard. :/ I can still dream of an XCOM 3 though.
Boy, this entirely sums up my experience with this game. I really enjoyed the combat, the different hereos, and the different decks, but I spent so much of my time doing stuff that wasn't combat, I just got tired of it.
Had they made a simple war table interface to upgrade and sort of run and gun the missions and skipping the RPG side of things i think this game could of really been a hit. I love the RPG stuff, but sometimes i also just want to do a lot of missions. Had they come up with an easy way to just let people roll missions and left the RPG side optional, but exactly how it is. i think the game would of been a lot more successful. the game just needs an easy way to roll missions, that's really the big missing piece. At least that's how i see the game.
I also think while i do enjoy the game and i'm a marvel fan i never heard of midnight sun's. Had they done this game with the avengers or x-men as the "Title" name, i think it would of done better. I'm into turnbased, and super heroes and in passing i heard of midnight sun's. I read PC game mag's and read about up coming games and such and even doing all that i didn't find it till 6 months later. If it had been either of the two other titles, it would of gotten me to look a little deeper sooner. Basically the game was finished before i even knew it existed.
-Released for $60 and DLC and skins were already available to purchase
-In game cash shop for skins
-Imaginary currency for DLC designed to make you always have leftover credits to convince you to pay more to be able to use your remaining credits
it got what it deserved
When stuff that isn't combat is GOOD, it adds to the overall experience. I've heard almost nothing good though about the "extra" stuff, and it always makes me hesitant to purchase this.
