At least it's not as annoying as the Arkham games, where Batman went out of his way not only to spare villains, but actually risked himself to save them... :/
You're right of course, it has been a while since I've played through the story. Crossbones takes a timeout too, but that is shortly before the finale. And in endgame grind they are all back. Memory refreshed.
I get this, I just wish it was at least an option to kill. They make - just about the biggest emphasis - every 15 minutes in dialogue about "don't trust them they're the demons kid" but then take away the option of something like killing. They really drive down the fact that you're supposed to be the devil or something but don't give you a chance to utilize it other than a few cheap dialogue options which as go as this:
Paragon - You're fine
Neutral - Do you like hot dogs?
Demon Child - You're dumb
