Too many devs with mommy issues.
Between this and diablo 4 I am starting to get the distinct impression that some lead game devs have serious mommy issues...

That or this game is just too young for me. I enjoy the small amount of card battle you actually get to engage in.

What the game does not tell you is that it is less a card battler and feel more like a dating sim without the hentai style pay off.

You put all this time getting people to like you, replying to their social media posts, go to club meetings.. and of course, behave like absolute children. I say meetings but its just cutt scenes.

You dont really need to know anything about the story, you can guess it..its that predictable.

Nico must be the worst character ever designed. A childs character that is so beyond unlikable.

Every single thing about this game feels half baked. the card play is decent enough but a bit repetitive..

more often than not I was shocked at how this childs thinking passed for a script.. Whoever made this script needs to work stuff out with their mother..

Seriously.. I cannot be the only one irritated by this social media dating sim bullcrap.

I mean, it's a reflection of old myths - Lilith isn't just plucked from thin air

Yes some of the, checks his notes, teenage or young adult, heroes act like children

The heroes are generally somewhat true to their comic book selfs, Nico is as Nico should be

It's a 90's cartoon you get to interact with, if you want deep philosophical content, this ain't it - it's enjoyable if you vibe with it, I had a blast but then I always liked Magik and Nico as characters

The halfbaked accusation, has legs, the game needed some more polish in places, game gets super rushed in the last 3rd and theres some balance issues, almost as if the people designing the heroes and the one's designing the fight - didn't speak

It's almost as if its a story with teen age super heroes made for 12 and up, Sounds like comics to me.

But if it bugs you, you can skip the entire social side of things and still beat the game with no problem. You don't even need to do the clubs. Run from the bed to the table, pick a mission and upgrade your cards once every 5-7 missions. It's a perfectly viable way to play. You can upgrade a bit more if you like and sending heroes out on the lone missions for upgrades is also something that is optional.

If you want to boost the friendship always send hunter on the mission. Or you can not worry if people stay at lvl 1 you can just send what ever combo you want and only take hunter on story missions were they are required. Basically you can beat the game with zero social and or max everything. There are lots of difficulties and the game scales. .

I'm getting on for mid life now and although I share your lack of meaningful engagement in the story and characters, I get the impression that for younger people this game would be incredible - especially for those who've never encounter a deck building game before, as afaik this is the most main stream and only AAA variant of this type of deck builder.

So overall I think it's very cool the game exists, but I am also kind of sad it wasn't made with a more mature audience in mind - I'd have loved to have loved this as much as a 12 year old me would have.

Yeah, you can't expect too much from a PEGI 12 rated superhero game. I think they did a really great job within these limitations though.

Good old wolverine keeping things real... He said..

"Im getting tired of all this mommy crap"

That line is actually in the game... a morsel of sanity for those of us who don't want to feel defined by drama.

This game is so Freudian its insane.

This is exactly the vibe I get while playing the game. I thought I was having deja vu until I realised I was just having flashbacks of The Amazing Spiderman and the old X-Men cartoons I used to watch.

Well, isn't that ironic?

Though I'm not sure that you've succeeded at getting people to like you.

Just look at it as a different type of leveling mechanism.

You are in fact the only one who is irritated by it here.

Absolutely agree. Nico is awesome and the casting choice for the voice (the actress from the meh runaway series) is also excellent.
I will say however it probably depends on if you go light or dark with your dialogue options. I went all dark the first time and that's what made me like Nico. If you go all light, she seems like a very cranky child (because she is a dark character and feels permanently misunderstood). So I am just guessing that most people that hate Nico started out playing light.

Well you are not. And while I do not agree with the mommy issue thing, there is no question Jake Solomon botched the game with his heavy leaning on the social interaction part (his "passion"). That combined with the Abbey mobile aspect dragged down the game.
And that is unfortunately the reason that we will never get a game again that leans on the strengths of Midnight suns: The Marvel cast, the excellent graphics and fun card battles. And as I said elsewhere: The really excellent voice cast (with very few exceptions) - we will probably not see this again in this genre, because it is expensive. Without the social interactions and the extensive abbey, the game would be really awesome. (I personally don't mind the long cutscenes and "cheesy" dialogue, because I see it as part of a "movie experience.).

Unfortunately the gaming press hasn't homed in on Jake Solomon and his faible for social interactions, but is repeating the narrative that the card battle system wasn't well received by the fans. Which ist actually just not true, because almost no one complained about the card battle system as this game's biggest issue. Most people at least consider it to be at least "ok". This whole story is actually based on a misinterpretation of something Solomon said in an interview (to Rock, Paper, Shotgun iirc). So we won't see the card battling system return, which is a shame.
No one aknowledges that it is the dragged out social interaction system that made this good game actually go bad. (Not even the publisher, who said they chose the wrong release date with to much other games around. While this is generally a valid concern, in this case 2K should have had the product to outshine all others, considering budget and brand...)
