Are the first few hours just slow or does it stay like this all campaign?
I see potential in the game, but I've put 3 hours into it and it's still drip feeding mechanics and the fights so far haven't made me feel threatened at all.
I know some games get good later, so about how long does it take to become engaging?

You get the core mechanics of the game pretty early. I'd say 3 hrs in you pretty much know how to play the game. What comes next is unlocking new characters, new cards, new decks, new enemy types. But the loop of the Abbey and the missions will pretty much stay the same, which is supposed to be the engaging stuff.

Hopefully you find the story interesting. I don't think it's bad. It has some nice reveals and set pieces.

Yes, it starts out slow and stays slow. I ended up enjoying it anyway, but didn't exactly hurry back for a second playthrough. It's a quality game, but tiring.

I can second this. The pacing is always slow, especially as you delve into the 'relationship' side of interacting with the other heroes in the Abbey.

Which, I wouldn't have been angry about had they just been a little better written and had better pacing overall. Still had fun with the game, but coming back to try to play it again has been a bit of a chore.
