Anti-Cheat Software in a single player game.
BIG UPDATE:
Ok after testing there are a couple ways to get the game working with Aurora from Cheathappens, No hacking, but you have to load the trainer first and then load the game via Aurora or via right clicking on the steam icon. If you run it via the play button in the steam UI, you get the message about "A program used for game exploration..."

Also I cannot get any of the hot keys to work, so I am having to Alt+Tab to turn on and off options or use the phone app to activate the trainer and turn any options on. Finally if you close the trainer while in the game, Midnight Suns crashes.

I use a trainer to max things like credits if a game does not have a dev console I can use. Normally I do this on my 2nd or 3rd play through or if I am REALLY getting stuck on easy.
Problem is I have so many games, that if I went for hard on all of them I would never finish the story. Also I NEVER cheat on anything that goes multiplayer.

Well this "feature" just got added to a single player game. Note I can get this with 2 mod managers, a trainer manger, and several other pieces of software just running in the background....not even activated and touching the game. Just them being in RAM is enough to trigger the game to quit with the message:

EDIT And to be clear, the game closes if detects software I use to mod Skyrim. I have never used the software to touch this game, but it still sees it running an update to a mod for another game and triggers. Now there is software from cheathappens I used on this game, and that is also triggering it closing with the error. But it is also a manager for cheats for other games, and if I completely disable the cheat for Midnight Suns....the game still sees it.

With the randomized skill upgrades and constant need to grind multiple types of resources, it definitely feels like this game is designed to be heavily monetized through currency purchases. We haven't seen it yet, but I guarantee it's coming if they have this type of anti-modding software.

...you really think so? Granted I only completed one playthrough, but I found as I got closer to the end I had far more of all resources (credits, essences, and especially gloss) than I had any need for. And getting more was pretty trivial. Hard to imagine folks paying cash for that.

I can see buying new skins or something, cosmetics, for those who want them. But straight up buying resources, it's hard for me to see a scenario where a player would feel they had to do that...
Gloss is important for cosmetics. And outside locking skins behind DLC walls gloss scarcity is the only way to lock cosmetics progression. If you buy all the cosmetics you easily spend several hundred thousands points in gloss. So I can see gloss being bought and sold.
well seems very few people will continue to play the game now. guess is time to uninstall

Aside from the fact that player count has been fairly constant, why would you base wanting to play a game on how many others are playing it?
They also have no legal right to scan your memory looking for cheat programs unless they explicitly state in the ToS or EULA. That's against the law unless that's in their EULA. They could get into some hot legal water over it.

Cheat Engine has a thread to block/remove their anti cheat stuff FYI. You have to kill a thread running inside of the EXE file itself. It's a "feature" that devs who use Denuvo can activate. https://fearlessrevolution.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22179&start=30

The directions are crytic. So I added some more step by step at the end of the forum thread.

I do NOT advocate doing this to steal currency for MTs.That's dishonest, and you shouldn't do it, and it might actually be illegal to do so.... BUT it's a SPG, and you can cheat at combat, game, stats, etc all you like.

No, it hasn't. Since day 1, I've use CE and cheaphappens (not to buy MTs though as the version I got comes with everything you can use MTs for), but for certain combat things. Even WeMod worked from Day 1

i tried cheatengine day 1 and the game wouldnt open if i had cheat engine open, if i had the game running and opened cheat engine, it would close the game.
It blocked only Cheat Engine originally. I used WeMod for my first playthrough. Since the Deadpool update, it blocks a lot more programs.

because i was using a cheat from WeMod and now they dont work .since i already played once and don't feel like doing all the insane grind all over.

Y'all are forgetting that this is a single-player game with microtransactions.
That's the difference.
If they can't prevent you from cheating in the content, how are they going to charge you for it?
This.
From what I read, the game was initially intended to have a lot of pay to win options, but after being criticized a lot, they decided to take a more "cosmetic only" approach with microtransactions. Since the anti-cheat was already there, they probably kept it to leave room for the originallly intended pay to win microtransactions in the future.
The horrible system to mod cards clearly shows that they wanted to sell crafting resources with microtransactions.

You probably didn't bother to mod your cards much to optimise your decks which you need to do for higher difficulties or just to cheese the easier ones. It absolutely chews through credits and resources unless you have the luck of a god. I wouldn't be shocked to find out that the game was built with mt's in mind before later being taken out. It's not like it's first time it's ever happened to a game. Deck builders are prime targets for predatory monetization.
That's a shame. I don't use trainers because I don't trust the software, but there's no reason for a developer to intentionally lock out trainers for a single player game.

No dev console, mod-unfriendly, NG+ where nearly everything is lost. I definitely got my money's worth from the game, but nearly everything post-launch is starting to make me a bit disgusted toward the developer.

I've made a complaint about this on the 2K support page, I dont expect an answer but I find this totally unacceptable and I'm actually considering filing a complaint with the EU over this intrusion by a game without any valid reason.

If it was a multiplayer game then yes, by all means stop people from cheating but it isnt and I bought the game and the Season Pass, there is nothing to monetize me for anymore and if this is the way they want to approach me as a customer then I'm seriously considering no longer paying for their games but finding alternative ways to play.

good luck with that. we don't have much in the form of consumer protection here.
