The movies and this game is not connected. But the game spends dozens of hours with the superheroes, and you will get to know some of them more than you likely ever have.

as said above. this game has nothing to do with the movies. different universe. this game is based on the Midnight Sons comic. with that adjustments to cast in order to appeal to a wider crowd.

the main story and cast you'll probably enjoy so just watch those cutscenes. characters like tony stark do have their more laid back attitude. however they're not devoid of personality like in the MCU that they are just there for child like comic relief and plot point progression. in short the characters are closer to their comic book variants which are far better.

when you go into the personal relationships and friendships it dissolves into a massive fanfic/high school teen drama ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ level. if it gets to you then it is ok to just fast forward through it all and you won't be missing out on anything. Just auto select the dark or light dialogue option depending what build you're going for with your main character. I suffered through it the first playthrough and on my 2nd i just skipped it all and it massively improved the flow and enjoyment of the game.

If you're an old time marvel fan you'll appreciate many of the references. While it takes liberties with the comics lore, the writers were definitely fans of the source material.

Movie knowledge isn't required at all. Its closer to the comics stuff. You'll be less familiar with a few of the Midnight Suns characters, mainly Nico from Runaways and the current Ghost Rider (but Johnny Blaze is here too).

As an older comics fan I loved it. But I'm also a fan of RPGs, Character creation and tactical games. So it was pretty solidly in my wheelhouse.

Eh, characters and story aside, all the action in the game is a turn-based strategy card game.
If you're into unlocking cards, setting up your deck to have synergy with teammates, and planning how to allocate resources, this game is pretty good.
If you want any sort of action game, it's probably not for you.

Many agree the writing is not good at quite cringe at times. Not as bad as the tv shows and movies, but that bar is not at all visible being so far below ground.

Tony Stark has just a mustache instead of the full RDJ goatee, if that makes you feel any more confident about its connection to the comics. I did feel like the voice they chose for Stark was trying (maybe not succeeding very well) to sound like RDJ, but the voices for Captain America, Dr. Strange, and Bruce Banner avoided sounding like their MCU actors, in favor of something more archetypal and maybe a bit cartoonish. In fact, a number of the voice actors reprised their roles from the MMO Marvel Heroes, which was definitely not based on the MCU (including Steve Blum as Wolverine and Nolan North as Deadpool in the upcoming DLC), if that makes you feel any better.

I would say this game is pretty close to how the Arkham games have a little bit of the popular media (in this case the MCU, in that case the cartoon series), a little bit of the comics, and a little bit of their own thing. If you're expecting it to be drawn directly from either the comics or the MCU, you're gonna be disappointed (I personally am a little bummed that they don't have alternate skins from the old comics), but if you want something that just kinda evokes the feel of the source material you like while ultimately being its own thing, I think you'll probably find some stuff in there that's more like the comics than the MCU.

10000% this. As a fan of the 80's and 90's, I guarantee you will soon hate the characters if you read the dialogue/superlinks/conversations. Magik uses phrases like "git gud" and they are all shallow and self-absorbed. You'll absolutely hate their discussions about Johnny Blaze. If you skip the dialogues, dont bother reading Superlinks, you'd probably enjoy it. The game play is fun, the alternate skins are pretty fun.

You'll probably enjoy this though, if you like Marvel from the 80s and 90s, there's some great jokes in there. Some people have issues with the "writing' but Marvel has been written basically this way for 60 years.

This is the most "marvelish" game ever made in my book. No components are missing , it has the graphic feel, the dialogues fits pretty well, there is team drama. You get the do the only thing no one ever does : unite the team which is your very own superhero feat. And the game is fun and tactically sound.

btw , I'm an 'old' gamer (born in the 70's)

Absolutely, yes. It's a dream game for old head Marvel fans despite some new age meme type dialogue sprinkled throughout.

Marvel fan here, from the 70s up til I tapped out in the early 2000s after all the multiverse BS. I loved this game, there has never been another game that does deep-dives into the lives and lore of the heroes like this one does.

Yes, many claim the writing is "bad" and I do get the point, but then - these are freaking comic characters, portrayed in a video game. This was not exactly based on any literary classics, and I think it does the job as well as can be expected. Sure, some of the dialog gets to be a bit repeatitive and sappy... Like, in the space of a few short weeks our new hero becomes besties with every other hero, having heart to heart discussions of how everyone trusts and appreciates each other, etc.

And I don't really approve of every portrayal of each hero, Spider Man has never been this needy and insecure, Tony Stark was a bit over the top dooshey, and Dr Strange delivered every line like a vaudeville performer. But I was easily able to get past the flaws and enjoy the game and what it was trying to do.

It's a mixture of the movies and comic books, imo.

I grew up on 1970s Marvel, and I'm loving the game.
