question regarding hangouts

so I am nearing endgame, just finished beating fallen hulk and everyone is only sitting around friendship level 3 with the exception of wanda and wolverine who are at 2. I was under the impression that you are supposed to get the option to hang out every night after a mission but i'm only getting that option it seems after certain story arcs. How am I supposed to hit max friendship before the end of the game?

Did you blast through story missions?

Hangouts occur after side missions, usually you get two or three free hangouts before you need to do a chain of missions to trigger another one/or move the story on.

You should have most the cast, (except 2-3) at 4-5 by end game if you haven't missed any.

basically I followed the story.. every story mission required you to do at least one or two general mission so that is what I did...I never really needed anything from doing multiple general missions in between story missions, my research is maxed, I just finished getting my 4th rune to explore the grounds, everything is pretty much capped except friendship

It's never been after every mission.

It's determined by a random seed assigned when you go to sleep the night before.

It doesn't happen naturally. You have to go out of your way to grind it like everything else in the game. Spam general missions to reset abbey stuff, keep looking for the dumb cat, spar with limited heroes, collect gifts from the store, do help quests for characters, throw complements only at max value, etc. It's not hard to max the friendships, but it's boring and grindy AF.

If you explored the abbey, you discover spots where you can bring heroes during the day. With some save scumming I reached +20 friendship with all of them on these occasions.

Hangouts happen every 3 or 4 nights, not every night. I maxed friendship before the final mission by grinding missions and doing hangouts when they occurred.

I've been playing for 40+ hrs, just encountered Fallen Sabertooth in Part 2, I've been grinding and enjoying the game a lot. I have 4 heroes at max friendship and everyone else at lvl 4, Wolverine just joined so he's still lvl 0. And I've only done 2 Haven Hangouts. I didn't find it hard at all to earn friendship. If you rush through the story and don't do much else, you'll have low friendship levels.

There are 15 Haven locations, and you'll be able to take everyone to an activity they love. Just have to find them all and allocate all of them equally.

Dialogue, daily training, Requests, Hangouts, Havens, Compliments, Gifts at every opportunity, and you won't have any problems increasing friendship levels.
