Not really. You can test the game for 2 hours and then you can refund if it doesn't feel right. Or if it turns out you really like the game, you have just bought a game you like. Either way, there are no issues pre-ordering a title. I trust in these devs, and hope they convince me they have a new franchise going that will keep me occupied in the future.
None of the interview I saw gave me that impression. Almost all of them had Jake saying that they tried to emulate the XCOM combat into this game, but it just didn't work so they went with a different approach. That doesn't mean to me that they wanted to make XCOM 3, just using something they're familiar with in a new project that ultimately didn't panned out.
Developers are capable of going outside of their comfort zone, and this is what I see from Firaxis. They're looking to games like Slay the Spire for inspiration (one of the best card game on the market) and likely other tactics game for the movement, so at least you know they're going in the right direction.
I also preordered the Legendary edition just to support Firaxis because even without the DLCs, I know there will be enough contents to last me a very long time because this game is built on replayability with different heroes composition.
Then that's even further from the truth since in all their interview, they seemed very eager to take on this new Marvel project and this new tactical card system. I didn't get any impression from their interviews that they should have made anything other than the game they're making right now.
I'm just giving my opinion then that those interview gave me no such impression, so I was just refuting your claim regarding the interview, not your opinion on the matter of wanting another XCOM.
I want another XCOM also, but at the moment, Firaxis seems really enthuse and confident about this game. I trust in their ability to provide a quality experience, even if it's outside of their comfort zone.
The only fear i got, for now, is that the game will be too easy, or at least too simple and quick. I'll explain myself: Jake said in a livestream that each fight won't last more that 5 or 6 turns. That looks really short to apply a reliable strategy, in 5 or 6 turns it seems you can't even go through your deck once. In a way, it tends to make the game more a puzzle game than a deckbuilder, but maybe at the cost of the difficulty (which is a good thing to help the A-RPG fan trying the game...).
Anyway, it's pure speculation.
I'm so hyped, i can't wait.
You'll play 3 cards per turn (more with Free cards and Quick cards), plus you get redraws, so you'll see a whole 24 card deck pretty quickly.
Even taking a very conservative assumption of only 3 cards played per turn gives the below:
T1: 6 cards +2 redraws = 8 cards seen.
T2: 8+3 (new cards replacing those played last turn) +2 (redraws) = 13
T3: 13+3+2=18
T4: 18+3+2=23
T5: 23+3+2=28
T6: 28+3+2=33.
Most deckbuilders are around the same amount of turn for a regular fight (maybe even shorter the better your deck is), if you know how to build the deck and know the synergies, with boss battles potentially going much longer. Remember that there will be cards with the "draw X amount of card" or "discard X amount of card", you're gonna be able to draw deeper into your deck so seeing your whole deck is not gonna be an issue. There are already some tough enemies that i saw in the stream already, that can duplicate themselves or other enemies on the map including elites. There are also the Fallen enemies that can just randomly enter your fight and you'll have a pretty good "puzzle" to solve at the higher difficulty level.
These regular battles are not meant to go on for half an hour or an hour long, I mean it can at the later part of the game or higher difficulty, especially the boss battle I reckon. You're just gonna get a lot of them so you're gonna get this burst of shorter mission and then some longer one, all intertwined into your entire playthrough.
Legendary. I had the spending cash and I like virtual dress-up, so the extra suits were nice. It including a season pass of extra characters was a welcomed bonus, as I see myself getting it anyways, so have my money Firaxis, I support your games.
I also don't know if I will enjoy the game for a long period of time or just your average 20-30 hours, so buying additional content DLC that's not available on launch makes no sense in my situation. If I keep at it I can still buy them later on. Plus I'm not really interested in Morbius and Venom, just Deadpool and Storm.
tl;dr 40 bucks for content I'm uncertain of makes me go for lowest entry price
