When you run out of tents, where do you get more subjects?
I notice that as you expand, the tents in the forests disappear. Then if you continue expanding, where will you get more subjects from?

There's four camps on each side of the map. Villagers are the most important resource in the game and these camps are the only way to get them. Thus its very important that you keep at least two Villager camps close by that are on your side of the Portals. The camp won't disappear as long as there's at least ONE tree between the camp and your Kingdom.

Usually this means leaving the first two camps on the right side of the Kingdom alone and only expanding to the left for Farmland.

Hm, but the ones that are gone already won't come back, right? It won't just spawn further in the forest for example?

The ones that are gone WON'T come back. Usually, there will be more camps behind the first portal. In my last run, there are 3 on the left, and at least 3 on the right side. If you are not that far in the game, you may want to consider restarting, the nearby camp to the right is very useful as it is super close to you. Quick recruit daily. You can even throw coin at night outside your base, and they may make it to your camp.

Like Galactimus_Zero, I always leave the super-nearby two camps on the right untouched and expand farming to the left.

Oh, once you destroy the portals there is more there?
I haven't been able to destroy them yet, even with a catapult it managed to withstand the attacks. And now I have to run a whole day for new recruits.
I guess I got myself into trouble and can't really get out of it now. What recruits I manage to get every day are all dead come the blood moon. Probably will have to restart.

Don't be afraid to run past Portals during the first 10 Days. It's actually encouraged (you'll find nice things.) Just make sure to bring a few coins with you in case 1-2 monsters attack. After Day 20ish though it's suicide to go anywhere near a Portal.

You can just run past them? O.o
Well serves me right for believing everything I read in the paperswatch on youtube. Before I bought the game I watched a let's play and the guy said that walking into the portal is "insta death" =/

Under certain conditions, approaching a portal can kill you very quickly. Generally, don't go near one without some gold, or really even be deep into the forest without more than handful of coins. The portals are least active right after a blood moon, and much less active at the beginning of the game than later on. So on day 6, day 11, day 16- those are very good days to try and slip past one and see what's beyond it. When you get to it, wait with it off-screen, far away enough that you can barely hear it, and make sure your horse is fully rested. Then run past it without stopping- if you linger, it's likely to start spawning faceless demons. If one or two come out you can drop a coin and keep running and they'll take the coin and leave you to explore what's on the other side, but remember you may need some coins to make it back safely as well, so don't spend them all on the far side.

This tactic is useful for establishing where the shrines are, finding and securing the Masonic Shrine specifically, and looking for treasure chests in the early game. Recruiting beyond a portal is mostly useless.

The first 5 days are the most important. Farms by five, knights by nine. Best win I've had yet (day 18) I only had 1 farm with 4 farmers and never expanded to the right at all. Don't over expand just for the sake of it. Try and recruit at least 4 people every day. Blood moon attacks should not be your threat, it's just practice and timing. Pay 'em off if you're caught off guard-- the retaliation when you kill a portal attacking you mid-day is the big casualties.

The best luck i've had with my playthru's were finding clearings in the forests with wall plots i could build on far ahead of my camps. I get a big bag of gold and ride out at night right after a red moon attack (or a normal night with a couple coins to spare for the baddies). Then cue the wall to be built and wait for the builders to come. They usually take 3/4th of the day to get there but after a blood moon you should be safe through the next night so keep on fortifying.

Does a couple of things:
1.Keeping your recruiting camps intact and safe to use at night.
2.Archers walking to and from will be hunting deer in between points for LOTS of income.

A bonus is building a lvl 2 farm right behind the far wall for builders to hangout so they can repair/reload the catapult without traveling far. Keeps me going for a long time (D83, died because of personal error) and if used early enough with at least 25+ archers it can end it all quick (D23).

Oh, so you can actually build beyond the camps, just so long as you don't chop down the trees between it and the main camp in the middle, they will remain active?

Yes, they will stay active. I did that in one of my games.
