"This game looked great" means nothing. It´s just the graphic style, that´s all. You should try Unity or Unreal Engine. I would be suprised if you are still into this idea in two weeks... :)

Engine is pretty much irrelevant to how this game looks, or how items tumble.

This game looks fantastic because the artists involved are amazingly talented people. If i had to make one of those scenes with my artistic ability, even in this engine it would look terrible, its 99% down to the art how good a game looks, not the engine, especially 2D games.

All modern engines/frameworks allow use of shaders so you can do cool lighting effects etc.

anything done in Unity here, could have been done in ANY other engine. And the way things move is either hand coded or they use built in physics, like Box2d or whatever Unity has built in (I havent played the game so i wouldnt know)

But to be honest, if youve been wasting the last 6 months choosing an engine, when you could have made 10 prototypes in that time, then maybe you need to be more focused.

A good upcoming Engine that is Multiplatform, visual like Unity with an editor and is Open Source is Godot Engine. take a look you may like it. And its free of course.

This game could have been programmed in Quick Basic or Assembler. It would have had much less performance problems.

Hah, that's funny.

I hve been looking for a game engine that makes it easy to have pixel graphics without having the pixels overlap, in this game the pixels line up

Oh, that's a shame... I thought you used your custom engine for this! Looked very unique and genuine. I'm now creating my own 2D engine, and I was inspired by your, as I though, custom engine!

You mean, pixel blending?

I believe he meant pixels acting as the minor unit of bitmap.
