I can't build anything after initial building.

EDIT: Just found it out. You have to press AND then HOLD the down key.... Sorry but that is nasty because you don't need to do that on structures with one circle.
Pls fix that. thx

I played a lot of games which are very difficult including EVE Online which is very complicated and I always found out how to do things right.
But I must say that I am totally disappointed that in this game here is not the slightest feedback in the game why I can't build certain things.

I can give money to people then they work for me. I can get one Archer that's it.
I can build wooden walls. But can't upgrade them further, nor can I build stone walls
I can fell trees.
But I cannot do more.
My coins are always dropping to the ground when I try to build something.
I found some shrine. One coin goes up then I can't add more. And so I can't get it. And that happens with everything.
So can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Figuring out things is one thing. Giving not the slightest clue why something is not working is bad game design in my eyes.

The game doesn't give you much information, but one of the few things it does tell you in the opening tutorial is to press and hold down to buy bows and hammers, it's not that hard to figure out that you use that anywhere it takes multiple coins.
