Panacea Potion
I usually test my stuff firsthand, but when I feel something is wrong I try to look up what other people are doing. The problem is that this feels almost impossible with this game's community, since everything you find online is usually some insane endgame build.

My point is that I'm working on my first Panacea potion production line, and holy fck, how much stuff is needed for that? I just started and the production line already runs at only about 33% efficiency because I produce only 15 blast potions per minute. Even at this stage, the build already consumes an insane amount of fuel (black powder) and fertilizer (growth potion).

I tried feeding the Panacea potions back into the system to make it self-sustaining, but since the production line is so huge, the belts don’t fill up in time, so there’s no back-padding. Sure, this might get fixed once I improve the efficiency, but still…

Am I just really bad at this, or is the Panacea potion production line actually this huge and expensive? On YouTube, people somehow cram the whole thing onto a tiny 2×2 platform.

You could probably look for a panacea blueprint and see how it works on a creative mode and then make your own version of it.

Do you have any upgrades on fuel and fertilizer? Are your belts and production the same level?
When I started by first panacea build, I had scaled my blast potions to a full belt (for whatever speed your belts are), and same for fertile catalysts . I had also needed to supplement my fertile catalyst lines with 1/4 belt restocker stations. So I had built out my infrastructure more than it sounds like you have.

I did finish my venus build using the excess blast potions/previous growth potions as well, so I had scaled up pretty high before tackling panacea potions). I'm currently working to make the self-sufficient panacea potion build to expand from my "make enough to unlock the next tier" . I'm aiming for what's roughly a 7x6 large platform foot print for 4 terminal machines. not even counting the liquids (brandy/aqua vite), so I think aiming big and sprawling is expected when you first start working on them
I'm using a blueprint from workshop for panacea but it needs panacea for an easy startup. At first, i had a very poor panacea production using a lot of space while being unefficient. With the BP, which is almost self sufficient, i need 4 of them to fully feed my 6 floors but I'll add another one for safety. I'm producing everything, including Sol, with cauldrons.
What I advice is to survive untill you stack around 400 panacea(needed to start up the production) in a vault then, install a BP and remove the unefficient panacea production. Use panacea for both fertilizing and fuel will make you spare a lot of money
And here is the link of the BP i'm using. Read well the instruction and discussion before using it.

My biggest question mark currently is how do I produce enough oblivion essences to be able to scale that high.
I made a bunch of 1 tile modular blueprints. Including some for vitality essence and such, maybe that can help you out. Most of those are made with plants and cauldrons. https://steamcommunity.com/id/Mytharox/myworkshopfiles/?appid=3669570

Thanks, I´ll have a look. But I must say that I think that cauldrons are a very off-putting mechanic which I don´t want to use because I think it is annoying.
Basically you need to make sure those cauldrons always stay filled. Then the recipe stays locked. So belts always need to supply faster than the cauldrons can handle. I agree though the mechanism certainly in later game would benefit from some kind of better way to lock those recipes and save some favourite recipes as it's terribly annoying when things go wrong.

Oblivion essences, if produced the traditional way, is highly dependent on input material.

Generally the more expensive the input, the faster and less fuel is required.
I gravitate towards using Lavender, as it is one of the faster ingredients.

Black Powder is also relatively fast, but requires a much more complex chain, and may mess up production ratios with Blast Potions.
I started using cauldrons with wood, wood, silvercoin for oblivion and financially it works just fine. Just started mass producing blast potions and fertile potions to get panacea potions. Sitting at 8000 silver profit a day and 3000 panacea potions in the bank. Gonna start feeding them back into the system slowly converting all fertilizer and fuel to panacea potion.

The game is really about just doin it and see what happens. Love it.
