The game can only be saved automatically
I didn't find the way to save the game manually and I can only load the latest game. I hope the game provides us more slots to save it.

As far as I know there is only one slot to save the game and that saves automatically. It is done this way to make every decision you make is final with all of its consequenses.

I get the reason behind it, but sadly that makes it impossible for my husband and I to have both different playthroughs. If there was the option, to change user or something, that would be very helpful.

You can always create another Windows-User and switch the profiles.

The saves are located in:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\tljh\Saved\SaveGames
Move your save files somewhere else, then start a new game.
Then when you want to get back, switch the save files to the version you previously moved.

Which is much more convenient than simply changing the user. :D

I think it's better to let we players make the choice: If we play explore mode, we can save and load the game at any time; if we play hard mode, the game can only be saved automatically.

Only one save per profile is ridiculous. I understand the idea of making every decision you make final with all of its consequenses, but this can be achieved by allowing one save per campaign. This way, people like Nedrial, above, can have separate playthoughts.

They already can do that warhawk_rider
Either by coping the appdata folder or simply create another Windows-User.
