Game fails to start at all.
I click to launch. Click play Narcosis. For a moment it seems like it's going to start...then it immediately closes...and goes from running to shutdown. This happens if I have it installed on my internal or my external HD. It's really damned annoying as I want to play the game right now if not sooner.

Hey all, yes there is a solution. I had this same problem. Turns out it's a problem with certain unpatch Unreal Engines, and affects multiple games. I discovered the solution for from the Red Matter discussion board, but it works for Narcosis and a number of other Unreal Engine games. Follow the following steps on your Windows PC, and make sure you restart at the end, and Narcosis should run if you've met the other system requirements. The following steps do not change your registry keys and cause no harm to the operating system.

1. Right click on "This PC" in Windows, and select Properties.

2. In About System, select "Advanced System Settings".

3. In the Advanced tab, select "Environmental Variables".

4. In the "New" button beneath the second window, System Variables.

5. For "Variable Name," enter

OPENSSL_ia32cap

6. For "Variable Value," enter

~0x200000200000000

7. Click "OK" in each window until you return to the About System window. Close it.

8. Restart computer.

I am very happy that I found this thread... I have a fairly high-end laptop, so I figured It would be able to run just about any game. When it wouldn't launch this game, I was very upset. Lol

Wow, good catch. I've been seeking an issue with this bug for close to a year now, many thanks to you.
Seems it affects cames using early VR runtimes, not only Unreal engines, but Unity too!

I was having the same issue on Win11.

What worked for me was
1. apply this fix https://steamcommunity.com/app/366870/discussions/0/3201493040460916950/#c3201496916542320086
2. uninstall game if installed
3. install game

worked fine afterwards.

The developers seem to have disbanded - their website is gone and they have no social media under the name they made this game. I doubt a patch will ever be released for this game.

They confirmed a year or so ago that the studio closed after they released the game. It was a good game, but I guess it didn't sell enough for them to keep going. Not uncommon for indies.

Thank you for confirming what I had suspected. Looking at the News section for the game here on Steam, I cannot see such an announcement, but I was able to find this:
https://twitter.com/narcosisgame/status/1261359944105750529

I scrolled back as far as 2018 looking for an actual announcement to no avail.

If you know of any other announcement about their closure, I'd appreciate a link. Thank you!
