- Obviously you have to like the fantasy setting. Even if there is some tech.
- More emphasis on melee for both factions.
- Towers and siege are more important.
- Mostly large open areas instead of close quartes combat.
There are more differences but i think you'll like Savage if you liked playing NS2. And in the unlikely case you don't, you can still make a refund.
There are lots of similarities like the asymmetrical teams with their own mechanics, equipment and weapons you can buy and base building.
The only thing I really missed was the map dynamics i.e. the ability to move your whole base from one spot of the map to another. Here you can build outposts (spawn points) protected by towers so again, very similar system.
There were a few games like this back in the day e.g. C&C Renegade or Battlezone.
Savage: The Battle for Newerth is the first game being a full RTS and a full FPS/melee game in one game, requiring a dedicated commander in both teams. It was the first definite RTS/FPS hybrid game.
Savage and Natural Selection 1 mod started their development at the same time, however NS was finished earlier since it was just a mod, not a full game. S2 Games had to build an engine from scratch. It's unlikely that any of those games was too much inspired by the other.
NS 2 and Savage aren't very similar either (although a lot of Savage 2 players tend to think that as they don't know how to melee in Savage 1 and play it like an FPS instead). In fact Savage 2 is a lot closer to Savage than NS2 is.
NS2 is a tactical shooter, Savage an action game.
NS2 weapons are inspired by HL, Savage's by Quake.
NS2 has low ranged weapon diversity, Savage very high diversity.
NS2 has very basic, Savage very advanced melee combat.
NS2 has very high ranged/melee damage, Savage low to medium.
NS2 is extremely asymmetric, Savage is very asymmetic.
NS2 has high racial speed differences, Savage medium (but extreme in combat).
NS2 plays indoors with narrow corridors, Savage only outdoors.
NS2 maps have very high complexity, Savage maps lower complexity.
NS2 maps are small, Savage maps often large and wide.
NS2 is heavily stealth based, Savage only partially.
NS2 has a basic, Savage an advanced RTS mode.
NS2 has a basic, Savage an advanced economy.
NS2 is purely PvP, Savage has also NPCs.
NS2 has no RPG elements, Savage has levels upgrading certain stats linearly.
NS2 is claustrophobic and suspenseful, Savage is bold and epic.
They're as different as like LoL and Smite or Dota, or as different as Quake3 and CoD Modern Warfare. They have similarities, but are more different than similar.
Natural Selection is like a corridor shooter with RTS elements added, and even more assymetrical.
Savage is much more like a traditional RTS game, with more traditional RTS maps, where your more traditional fantasy RTS units except workers are controlled by players.
I like both games. If you like one, you might not necessarily like both. If you don't like one, you might like the other.
I like Savage more and think it has more potential if they make the right improvements and changes.
