I'm playing in co-op mode.
Not sure, i think that's because you died and then it doesn't count the ones you had rescued and lose bonus points...
But just by getting the prize from them should count in the achievements as far as i know!
Metal Slug is an old-school arcade game where things like the point bonus you get at the end of the level for the number of POWs you free is dependent on you getting to the end of the level *without dying*.
But as consolation, if you free more POWs than your co-op partner (or you free 10 POWs without dying in single-player mode), you get a massive point bonus to your score.
