Metal Slug X, 1, and 3 "steam controller" issues
I seem to remember playing the arcade that I could run and shoot and look up with out severe controller malfunctions. I can't seem to run and shoot- or look up/down; the response times are really, really bad; like unplayable bad. I thought it was because of maybe dying batteries but that doesn't seem to be the case, I replaced my batteries downloaded a different "control" profile on Big Picture but that didn't work either. Does anybody have an explanation or solution to my current issue?

You can fix that by mapping the keyboard inputs on your controller, then it works just fine.
xinput isn't working.

Ok, thanks I'll attempt to give it a go and see what happens

My keyboard was behaving the same as my controller was. I just requested a refund... Oh well if I do get a refund I will still be waiting for optimised controller support for later, if not, there are other 'DotEmu' games I love anyway.

Well I got a refund. If they have an update with better controls I will purchase again. 3.99 for all three was a really good deal but man I just wish the controls werent so darn bad.

Well, the Steam Controller does have its issues, but nothing like a wired/wireless 360 pad gets the job done, lol. X3

Yeah see, Iuuuuv the 360 controller but one day I had a rage quit and it lost against tiled floor :(
I was looking forward to the Steam controller and overall, I was extremely disappointed in it, though it plays indie games and retro (except this one apparently) really well otherwise.

I have the same issue with steam controller. Works on everything fine besides Metal slug, MS3 and MSX .
only once i encountered a problem with the controller in street fighter but it could be resolved through inside the game's settings.

I agree totally and would really be interested in a solution because also a huge metal slug fan since a kid. It would be awesome to get the same run and shoot feeling as arcade

Yup! precisely! I have every other game that works like a charm but my keyboard and Steam controller had the same issue; no matter what i did to change it.

well my keyboard I don't know.... but I know that my Steam controller had been up to date by steam for their 'latest' driver they had. But it's ok I got a refund and will purchase once they have remedied this issue; if not, oh well

Metal Slug games (1st one released in 1996) were never made to work with modern gamepad controllers. If you want to use one, you'll need to use keybindings to the functions of the controller, as the original analog controls were made to be used with the Neo-Geo's fancy joystick, not touchpads which the game interprets as button presses.

The issue I had wasn't using the touch pad I was using the joystick provided and when nothing else worked I tried the keyboard functions, and it still responded congruently. I tried everything for the short time that I had it before I had it refunded. Anyways, like above, I'll just wait for a fix if it ever happens; no big deal.

Analog stick for movement is broken in all of these games. It's best to map them to the keyboard arrow keys with either the Steam controller mapping function or JoyToKey if you have a 360 controller.

Already did that as well and I had no luck in "Big Picture Mode" button mapping.

Ok. Try this. Open big picture mode. Go to library. Find your metal slug game. Click Manage Game. Click Controller options. Where it says Steam Input Per-Game Setting, make sure that is turned to FORCED OFF. Fixed my issue.
