WE'll be doing one as well man umm.. if it put's it into perspective I usually run them on my PC and on Minecraft can have about 90 people playing before I have issues (that's including me running the client on the same PC)

Intel i7-8 Core
16GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 980
Running off an SSD for improved speed!

I plan to host our server on my PC until we can afford to rent full dedicated servers, we'll have 4 servers connected, a home server then open ocean then off-shore isles then the mainland/pvp server!

well for what i have seen from hosting game b/f minecraft uses tons more power then most game do is all the mod pack. i have had minecraft server use 512mb to 2G for just under 10 players but that with a server runing 140+ mods

wyrm is a game whos server run with 1000+ in mind. the servers are going to be much lower in the power to slot ratio so this i7/16gb ram pc well run it like a champ but how much do i need to run it on a centos or ubuntu server

I would love to know this as well, from the devs, based on personal experience running tests on it. I know minecraft can be really resource intensive if you want a big world.

The most limiting factor will likely be the number of creatures on the server, so you can simply set that to a value your server hardware can handle, slightly less to be able to support higher player numbers.

Could we maybe get some initial data from your in house testing?

Since Wurm is running on Java, do you think that a Wurm Server could be hosted on a Raspberry PI (Linux, 900 MHz ARM processor, ~512MB free RAM).

That is the smallest and cheapest (4 Watt) computer setup I could think of.

But I guess we will just have to try it out.

i would like to see that

we need a good and straight answer about what we gonna need to host a server of 100 players with let say a 1000 animals on it .

one option that i wanna use is a VDS:
---
Cores 3 X 3.2GHZ+
Memory / Swap 3GB - 6GB
Disk Space 150 GB
Network Port 100MBPS
Bandwidth UNLIMITED
---

will the server run smooth on this kind of virtual dedicated server ?
or will i need something way more powerfull like a dedicted strip iron ...

thank you ,
alex

1000 creatures isn't enough assuming you want to frequenly run into creatures while out adventuring. Given that WO players are always complaining about a lack of creatures it shouldn't be that hard to forsee folks will have the same expectations on WU servers.

A better measure is about 167 tiles per a creature.
512x512 map @ 1,570 creatures
1024x1024 map @ 6,279 creatures
2048x2048 map @ 25,116 creatures (Deliverance sized)
4096x4096 map @ 100,462 creatures (Independance sized)
8192x8192 map @ 401,849 creatures (Xanadu sized...lol I can't imagine the hardware for this)

yes , some sayed that 1000 creatures takes about 700mb of ram ... now ... the biggest question is for the map we gonna use are 2048x2048 map @ 25,116 creatures (Deliverance sized) , LOL 32gb+ ram gonna be needed ... and to actualy host a server that gives you 32gb ram is realy not cheap ... its about 150$ - 250$ a mounth .

thats a big problem ...

I've seen a lot of variation in pricing. The prices I've found by google "dedicated game servers" start at 100-150 usd per month (I just look for 32GB memory). But I've seen folks on Wurm forums find other sources that are much cheeper and here is an example:

Intel Xeon E3 1230v3
32 GB
2 x 120 GB SSD
1Gbps/sec
29.99 € per Month

+ is 34.01 € per Month with tax which is 50.16 CAD or 38.12 US Dollar
