The key should definitely be created when you create the lock (if applicable), and it'll appear right next to the lock in your inventory. It'll be the same quality as the lock (and it's wise to label them both immediately).
If a key is required you'll probably need it to attach the lock (not sure), and perhaps to alter permissions (again not sure), but you shouldn't need the key just to use the door/vehicle yourself.
Trouble is different doors/vehicles require different locks, so you might be trying to attach a door lock (no key) to a boat or something;

If you're certain that you made a boat lock and there is no key, that sounds like a bug. Mine doors shouldn't require locks, although you still have to set the permissions correctly to prevent unauthorised access.
As things stand in WU single player, you only need door/gate locks.
Trolls can open unlocked doors and gates :/
And Nogumps o.O
Although I haven't seen a Nogump in WU yet and pray I never do.
When you access your character management page for gates - the gate will be named and easily identified.
If you dont name the lock, its pretty much guess work.
The real issue is that after I completed crafting the door, I needed to be outside the mine to select the border tile (no border tiles in the mine, as far as I could tell.) The door installed, just fine, but now I come to my mine opening and there is a door. The door is closed. I try to walk through it and it stays closed (with me outside).
I try "right click", "left click", making my off hand into arcane symbolic gestures, while clicking . . . I don't get an option to unlock or open the door. I have clicked on my "body" and my "hand" in the character screens. Even set my character with specific option to use / open / unlock the door through manage screens (my door actually has the character's name on it, when it is examined.)
It is rather frustrating, mostly because I am certain there is some very simple game mechanic that Wurm On-Line people have been using for 10 years : )
I installed a couple of mine doors recently and I'm fairly certain I set access via the doors themselves (which would have been right-click>permissions). If you haven't figured it out by tonight then I'll check it again in detail.
Don't worry about missing the obvious either, sometimes these things can be really rather tricky to figure out. I remember trying to improve steel mine doors and for the life of me I couldn't do it. Every time I approached the door it disappeared (to let me through). How am I supposed to improve something when I can't click on it directly? Turned out you can't approach them directly, you have to sneak up on them from the side, lol.
Mine doors are fairly easy to set up though, and it sounds like you know how to set permissions. So given what you said about the palisade gate there might be an issue here that needs looking at.
Is the palisade gate and mine door on a deed?
I now see what you mean about the "stealth doors". When I re-started my game and I could see no doors, where the last time I played there were definitely large doors blocking my way, I was a little surprised. But decided to run inside my mine and collect useful items, just in case.
And neither palisade gate or mine door are on a deed. The palisade was a very early game attempt - freaking out after seeing a large bear wandering towards my cloth tent and fragile body. No iron, so no nails, so palisade was only option. Stop building after I ran into the non-passable gate. Somehow the idea of a fence that kept me out with the bears was not as attractive : )
Might be worth going back and see if the game reload magic was all that was needed for the palisade gate. Much face-palming will happen if it now works . . .
Anyway, good news that a reset appears to have fixed the doors! It might be worth making a lock that isn't a door lock, just to check keys are appearing as they should.
If you're not a litterbug you can dispose of any crap locks/keys (in pairs) by sacrificing them in an altar if you don't need them :)
Woodscrap (Active) > RMB Item to be wrapped > Giftwrap
However, I have double check every bit of inventory and storage and do not seem to find any keys, at all. Will craft another lock or two, next session, to double check.
Right now, I am very much the hoarder / litter bug - just dump everything in piles until I can figure out a use for it. Much easier than a long hike to one of those altar things (which I presume can only be found at the white and black light beams, correct?)
@Xzal - might try that just to see if it works (single player / creative). I have a ton of rock scraps all over the place, from my mining attempts. Finally figured out you could "dispose" of a few at a time - but picking up 4/5 of them, dispose, rinse and repeat got old quickly.
