If you're playing on a public server though, be sure to go to an uninhabited area of the server. A lot of people frown on rampant deforestation. Would also be a good idea to leave some trees standing so the forest will eventually regrow.
A small group I played with back in the home server days did A LOT of testing on this and found a few minor factors that worked well. The better minor ones were the subskills of Smithing (except metalurgy), Masonry and (to our surprise) Farming. Carpentry seemed to work more like fight skill (better BC than BS), but we found better BS increase with fine carpentry.
NOTE: This pre-dates ships and when the paving skill was only increased by actually paving a tile (packing dirt was part of digging) so NO testing was done with these skills.
Going to try the sprout thing. But I'll cut the trees down with my newly created large/huge axes and them hack them up to gain more woodcutting.
Oh and yes, the keybinds are really important. I grabbed and modified a pack from WO and it has been helping a lot. I really think they should have something like that included.
There is a Java mod for it on the official WO forum, though I suggest waiting until people release more proper launchers that does not require manually replacing java codes. Or finding a server that has installed the mod, it is not a client mod.
Also before you go chopping trees down ask the server admin if they have installed the recent tree growth patch. Without it trees will not regrow, even if you sprout them. Ask the admin for a sickle once this is in place, be a friendly neighbor and sprout them so that someone else does not have to replace the forest.
I setup the keybinds to allow changing to different profiles depending on what I'm doing. So click mining in the commands and then I can press "C" to mine, or go to craft and "C" improves.
@yarnevk, I'm playing on Mythmoor, not sure if they have the tree mod but I'm guessing they do.
I wasn't aware there was a tree bug. When I was playing by myself I had trees growing.
Yeah I plan on walking a ways out with just a sickle, axe, food and water. Debating if I should equip my chainmail or not. Probably will.
