Expanding a house
I am getting ready to plan my first house. As my carpentry level increase I will probably want to expand my house (add to it). Wurmpedia doesn't say much but it says to use the carving knife to remove a wall as quoted from the website

"With the introduction on multilevel houses, writ owners can now expand and modify houses once they are complete. The removal of walls and floors in this process is best done with a Carving knife."

Do we get any resources back from that wall, roof or floor?

As far as I know, no. Though to be honest I don't know in the case you're mentioning. It must be something new they had implemented. As far as I knew you just had to use a maul or club (from a troll) to bash down the wall, in which case you don't get anything back.

Alright, update for ya. Just hopped on my server and gave it a go. Where destroying the wall with say a maul or something, it would completely destroy the wall and you would have to replan the wall.

When using the carving knife, it takes it back to the planning phase so you could basically use this to replace the wall. Either with a different wall type (wall, window, door, etc), or with an entirely new material (upgrading from a wood to stone wall, which would be more durable and more slowly decay, if you were not on a deed)

In either case, you do NOT get any supplies back.

EDIT: P.S. Do you know how you would actually add onto an already completed/built house? It was just on my mind when I initially looked into your post, thinking that's what you would be asking.

Thank you for doing all that and answering my question about the resources. I really do not understand your question.

Well, like say you've already got a 2x2 house built. Do you know how to add another tile to the building to make it bigger? Like making it into a 3x3 house or some other odd configuration?

Well I was assuming once I removed a wall and had a higher carpentry skill I could just continue planning from the recently removed wall. Is this not how it is done? I do know (at least I think) that you need a finalized house and a writ in order to make additions.

Yes, the house walls at the least need to be fully complete. Basically, the formula for figuring how big a house you can make is; Your carpentry skill has to equal the # of wall and floor tiles your house would occupy. So take a simple 1x1 hut. It would have 4 walls and 1 floor, so your skill would need to be at least 5 to make it.

Now, to expand a house, assuming you have the skill to do so, you'd simply activate your mallet, right click a tile next to the house and you should see the option 'Add to Building' or something along those lines. Clicking that, you'll see wall plans pop up! Bingo, you've started to add to your house!

Also, when doing this, you might end up with interior walls. You can do the above mentioned thing with the carving knife to remove them, but that leaves the planning structure.

Again, with the mallet active, you can right click the planning wall and should be able to 'Remove Plan' and ta dah! You've got yourself a clean interior!

Knife on wood wall makes I belive bigger dmg and harms the tool less than if you use a club/maul etc. On a timber wall it is the maul that is best to use and also on a stone wall.

This helped me so much. Was trying to break a wall and roof with a mallet and hammer. Got them up to 4 damage. The knife does something like 44 damage with each click on a roof and 92 damage on a wall.

Guess it's best to lay out the whole house plan before building roofs.

You can destry walls using a knive, a maul or a hammer but you need body strength 21 to do it.
That's why I recommend to build doors instead of walls where you plan to expand your house later. So you can start with a smaller shag and improve/expand it later. an other problem is that you can not use your bed if there are any unfinished walls at your house.
The problem is you can build a small shack quiet early and you will be soon able to build bigger one because your carpentry skill will improve quiet fast. But it takes quiet a long time before you can increase your strengh above 21.
