When using the carving knife, it takes it back to the planning phase so you could basically use this to replace the wall. Either with a different wall type (wall, window, door, etc), or with an entirely new material (upgrading from a wood to stone wall, which would be more durable and more slowly decay, if you were not on a deed)
In either case, you do NOT get any supplies back.
EDIT: P.S. Do you know how you would actually add onto an already completed/built house? It was just on my mind when I initially looked into your post, thinking that's what you would be asking.
Thank you for doing all that and answering my question about the resources. I really do not understand your question.
Well I was assuming once I removed a wall and had a higher carpentry skill I could just continue planning from the recently removed wall. Is this not how it is done? I do know (at least I think) that you need a finalized house and a writ in order to make additions.
Now, to expand a house, assuming you have the skill to do so, you'd simply activate your mallet, right click a tile next to the house and you should see the option 'Add to Building' or something along those lines. Clicking that, you'll see wall plans pop up! Bingo, you've started to add to your house!
Also, when doing this, you might end up with interior walls. You can do the above mentioned thing with the carving knife to remove them, but that leaves the planning structure.
Again, with the mallet active, you can right click the planning wall and should be able to 'Remove Plan' and ta dah! You've got yourself a clean interior!
Guess it's best to lay out the whole house plan before building roofs.
That's why I recommend to build doors instead of walls where you plan to expand your house later. So you can start with a smaller shag and improve/expand it later. an other problem is that you can not use your bed if there are any unfinished walls at your house.
The problem is you can build a small shack quiet early and you will be soon able to build bigger one because your carpentry skill will improve quiet fast. But it takes quiet a long time before you can increase your strengh above 21.
