Creating a mine is a BIG first step, you need to do a LOT of digging, There is rock under all that dirt, you just need to dig it out first. Then you need to dig all four corners so the rock face is bare and use the tunnel option to open a mine.
Checking the sides of the tunnel you want it to be about 20-30 slope up on each side, any less and you will create a pit that you fall into.
@Dugbo Farstrider: That's more usefull. I didn't know that there's rock under the normal dirt. Definately going to look into that.
@All: I still don't get it, why there are so many hostile creatures around. I didn't exactly count all the creatures that I encountered, but I definately had more hostiles then friendly ones. I'm a just an unlucky one? Did I misunderstand the setting in the server creation?
I will try to lure them in the village, but they mostly stay outside and shouting "Guards!" didn't really work. I'm more interested in a way to explore, without the need to run back like an idiot all the time, because that wolf is tearing me to pieces.
If that's the case, then the 1% would only apply to newly spawning animals.
Most creatures can't swim, so you could try running towards water, then swimming far enough down shore that they lose interest. Bears and crocodiles CAN swim though, so that won't work on them.
There are a bunch of guard towers throughout the adventure server. Try to type help or guards in the local chat when the hostile creature is near one of those towers (remember to target the creature first) and the guards will help you out.
If you start in jenn-kellon, in one of the building's weapon rack there is a high quality halberd and spear, pick one of those up. Next to the knarr theres a high quality lantern too. Try to find an iron vein as soon as possible as make some armor for yourself. This should allow you to kill many of the creatures without getting too wounded.
I must admit, what I personally did is just find a rock tile, tunnel it (in order to create a mine), and then go into GM mode and make an iron vein for myself, as I didn't feel like going through all the rock tiles to find a vein.
Correct, changing your settings will only influence new spawns. Your best bet - instead of running to the town, is to do what what has been recommended and run to a guard tower and shout "guards!" or "help".
You can key bind this:
Press F1
Type: BIND <key> "say guards!"
This way you can mash a button :) Try to wait until you're close to the tower, as sometimes they don't hear you. You also have to be in combat with the creature, though not actively getting hit. Meaning you can't just call guards on something that's near you but hasn't started to go after you.
As for rock, you may want to work on your digging skill and dig away dirt closer to the base of a mountain. Remove the dirt on all four corners of a tile and it will expose the rock. You can then Right-click and Prospect to see if there's any near-by ore.
You can also right-click and Rummage on most rock tiles for a chance to forage up some iron rocks. They aren't the best, but work well in a pinch.
Also, I'm really glad that the somewhat high number of hostile creatures isn't related to the setting in the server creation. In that case I should be somewhat safe if I can clear these initial "problems" out.
I'm trying those things out as soon as I can and see what I can do better. So far, I had alot of fun and I'm really happy to see a game with such depth. On the other hand, the tutorials seem to be something, that should be watched one at a time. For a new player, the amount of doable stuff is just overwhelming.
Also, if you really don't want many aggressive creatures, you may want to try Creative. The database is empty from the start as far as creatures go, so if you set a low initial aggro count, it should be immediately reflected.
You could try copying that to Adventure, but you will lose your NPCs and some things may not work right. You can always create a Copy and give it a shot though!
You might also want to make sure you are getting your newbie buffs. I have had several times where for some reason a new player I create doesn't start with the newbie buffs and I have to restart the server and log back in to get them. You will see the buffs at the top right by default. One of the buffs make it so most (if not all) mobs ignore you unless you enter the same tile they are on. This lasts for 24 hours of actual gameplay.
I haven't tried this yet, but there is a guide at http://www.rheyansgaming.com/tutorial-how-to-install-custom-maps-clean-your-database-in-wurm-unlimited/ for custom maps. Even if you don't plan to do a custom map, there is a part of it where she explains how to edit the database. You might be able to tinker with that and find where the mobs are and delete them so new ones will have to spawn in with the settings you set. Of course you will want to do this on a copy just in case you mess stuff up.
