The ore quality is also limited by the type of vein as well. A poor quality vein has a maximum of 20-29 quality, while an Utmost could give 95-99 quality ore. (See Prospecting in Wurmpedia for table.) So for example in order to get 60+ quality ore you would have to mine a Good (max 60-79 quality) vein, with a mining skill of 60+. A better quality pickaxe would mean that more of the ore is likely to be of the higher quality, whereas a low quality pickaxe would mean that more of the ore will be low. A rare pickaxe will increase things quality slightly (but I am not sure off the top of my head how exactly it affects it).

Doesn't always seem to work when it comes to the tool. I have two pickaxes, one is the original 10 ql axe that I started with, (now 8 ql due to repairing) and the other is a 32 ql axe I made as a 15ql and improved to 32 which was the highest ql I could get with the quality of ore I had at the time, (where I also found out improving is a PITA because you damage it so often with the next action that you remove the previous actions improvement and then some).

Doing a test mining 100 ore with each pickaxe, I found both axes gave me pretty much the exact same amount of high quality ore. My mining skill is a little over 53 and I had around 30% of 53 ql ore from both pickaxes.

pickaxes do help
rare supreme and fantastic pickaxes help the most while there is a small ammount of bonuses for 50+ pickaxes and 70+

as for ores its mostly prospecting and seeing the max Quality of ore like romen said that helps and your skill in mining / tool effects your max quality you can get from a vein

Didn't mean to necro this, but I just noticed that I am mining 52ql rock shards from a normal tile with 36 mining skill and a 8ql pickaxe.

Not too sure how this happened or what setting led to this but I don't like it.

Looking back now I also noticed I was getting higher ql logs that what my wood cutting skill was too.

I am going to have to find out where or why this is happening...

sounds like your using epic stats - its 1.5x skill level use

Probably because you're playing on an epic server. Epic server uses a slightly different skill curve, It will show up as effective skill if you hover over your mining skill or woodcutting skill.
